Have u ever heard of cat not minding cut nails AND filing them NOT sharp?

umm noHave u ever heard of cat not minding cut nails AND filing them NOT sharp?
We cut our cat's claws often.

Just don't cut too close or they will bleed.

Look at the claw and you will see a sort of line where it is too close.Have u ever heard of cat not minding cut nails AND filing them NOT sharp?
mine don't mind when I cut their nails, but I've never tried filing them -
my cat loves getting into the shower with me. she loves getting wet. doesnt run from the water hose either. shes strange.

Clipping/filing cat nails?

Is it possible to take maybe a 100 grain nail file (used for acrylic nails) and soften the edges? Has anyone tried this?Clipping/filing cat nails?
Get your cat a scratching post! Or you could take the cat to the vet. My vet will clip my cat's nails for $15. (It's worth it since she hates it and tries to scratch and bite-not very tolerant)Clipping/filing cat nails?
If your cat is not cooperative with clipping, get a helper. Wrap the cat securely in a towel %26amp; let the helper hold %26amp; comfort while you do the clipping.. If you do it often, it will be easier because you just need to clip the very tips off..
Absolutely. It would take longer to file them then to trim them. Your local vet or pet store should carry nail trimmers specifically for cats. They're relatively inexpensive. If you can get your kitty to sit still long enough to file them, then there should be no problem!

Good luck!
If your cat will sit still for that it will work.

Filing nails into square shape? help girls!?

i dont usually file my nails as i dont need to they all grow quite long (not too long! just a nice length) even and perfectly round, but i want to do a french-manicure..with square nails as it doesnt look right with round!

i know how to file nails but it seems everytime i try to file a square shape, the edges end up rounded off so my nails just look round again!

is there a special way off doing it properly??Filing nails into square shape? help girls!?
While I have the opposite problem (nails grow square, dunno how to round them) I think growing them out longer than you want them, then filling the tips down until they're no longer rounded might work. Don't try to file the sides at all, and don't even think about touching the corners with the file.

Also, square nails tend to break a bit more, the edges catch on stuff easily.Filing nails into square shape? help girls!?
File the sides of your nails in a straight up and down motion. But not too much. Then file the tops of your nails straight across without going down around the edges. I hope you understand as its hard to explain without showing. Hope i helped :)

CAN A KITTENS NAILS BE FILED OR CUT?

** MY CO WORKER HAS NEW KITTEN AND HER HANDS ARE ALL SCRATCHED UP EVERYDAY**CAN A KITTENS NAILS BE FILED OR CUT?
If she is scared to do it herself she can take kitty to a groomer/Petco/Petsmart or the vet for a trimming service.

I have a gray calico and was scared to do it myself cause they were hard to see with her coloring (even her paw pads were different colors 3 are black one is pinkish)

Took her to Petco and they charged 10 bucks lasted for a few weeks. When she had her last vaccs at vet I had them do it and supposedly they did a trim and file for 10.50 and it didnt seem to last any longer than the trim at Petco.CAN A KITTENS NAILS BE FILED OR CUT?
thank you for the points.

This is my third cat in many yrs but first one I ever had to trim nails. The other two were older cats and never scratched me but this kitten omg.

Hope your friend's kittys gets her nails done and your friends scratches heal

Sure they can! They make little clippers you can pick up at a pet store for around $5. Your coworker needs to train her kitten to learn that hands and feet are not toys tho. Its common for kittens to want to play with hands and feet, and while its cute, it makes for bad habits later in life.
yes the get cut or as most people say ';trimming'; or ';clipping'; by special clippers here is an instructional video on how to do it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryBvqkSAUo8

hope that helps thanks

PS. do it while the kittens are resting or after having a nap
You can buy the clippers at Petco for less then ten dollars but you have to do it in small amounts. You can also buy petpaws and put it on their nails. It kind of molds to the nails so that they wont hurt when he scratches.
In my experience I have seen that as long as the kitten is older than eight weeks it is ok to cut their nails with either a human pair of nail cutters or a special cat/kitten nail cutter. Hope this helps!
I just use regular finger nail clippers (ie: the ones for humans)

Wait until the kitten is calm and resting and just clip off the ends. If you clip to much you will draw blood and the cat will not be happy.
Yes I cut my kittens nails. You only need to cut off the very tip of the nail when they are kittens, that way they are not as sharp and do not break the skin as easily. Just be sure not to cut the quick.
I trim nails starting at 5 weeks old and do it weekly.
They can be filed or cut.

Is filing and buffing ur nails the same thing?

as titled.

thank you !Is filing and buffing ur nails the same thing?
No. Filing is shaping around the edges of the nail to create the shape - square or curved. Buffing is smoothing the top of the nail with a buffer or an emery board. This can actually help your nail polish to last longer and not chip!Is filing and buffing ur nails the same thing?
Nope. Filing is generally just smoothing out the tips of your nails. But buffing usually involves a finer-grade tool or a progression from rough to fine tools to smooth and shine the entire nail.
No its not filing is going on the edge and buffing is smoothing the top of ur nail with a buffer.
filing is shaping your nails and buffing is done on top of the nail to get rid of ridges

  • Filing nails down?

I'm a guy and was just wondering is it ok to file my nails down, when I cut them their jagged and not a good shape.Filing nails down?
YES! Please file down those nails! For your ladie's sake! I prefer groomed nails on a man any day! And please keep them clean! If you're working in dirt or grease, run your nails over a bar a soap so the grime can't get underneath the nail and it's easier cleaning in the shower. Thank you from all the woman out there if you follow these directions!Filing nails down?
you have to after u cut them, women dont want guys fingers to look ugly and etc. cut your nails after u shower so that way they are softer to cut.
Definitly! If your nails are rough and jagged, you should use a file to smooth them down. (what woman would want to hold your hand if the nails are jagged?)
Yes it's ok you want to look nice and clean so keep your nails manicured I know alot of men who get there nails manicured but no polish
place your nails in jelly to make them strong.......being a guy doesnt mean u cant file your nails.
AFTER YOU CUT THEM, JUST RUN THE FILE OVER THEM TO MAKE THEM SMOOTH.

Tips for shaping and filing NAILS?!?

I like to file my nails in a square shape. Can you give me any tips for filinf them into perfect shape?Tips for shaping and filing NAILS?!?
Do not file the sides of the nail - this will weaken the structure and make them more breakable. File only the top.

Make sure your file is not to abrasive or it will cause fraying at the tip and will also be more breakable. I recommend a 240 grit for natural nails.

    Good Luck !

Am i the only guy who files his nails and fixes his eyebrows?

Im straight btw lol. I dont think theres anything wrong with it, having good nails is good.Am i the only guy who files his nails and fixes his eyebrows?
are you my long lost best friend or what?!

I get made fun of all the time for being so clean. Being a guy is NOT an excuse for being nasty.Am i the only guy who files his nails and fixes his eyebrows?
I clip my nails but I do trim my eyebrows.
I'd like to see alot more straight guys fix their eyebrows! SERIOUSLY! My hubby files his nails too. You're not the only one!
My wife does it for me...
I don't think there's anything wrong with it personally. I wish my partner would do more, I offered to give him a 'manicure' just the other day and he had an absolute fit!
Wickedly smiles... are you a TEXAN?
    I certainly hope not.
alot of gay guys do it, but i dont really know any straight guys who are into that kind of thing...maybe metrosexuals, like ryan seacrest, do so, but i dont really know.
Why no, sweetie! Seriously.....no, so do I. I occasionally have to trim by eyebrows along with my beard (1 or 2 hairs on each side out-grows the rest, %26amp; poke into my eyes). As for my nails -- they're razor thin, grow like crazy, %26amp; are suseptible to splitting %26amp; flaking. I keep them trimmed to avoid cutting myself with them. Please excuse the joke, because I'm also straight.
I very much doubt you are alone.
No, nothing wrong with that. The filing is a bit over the top %26amp; trimming your brows would be OK. I'm sure tons of guys do it, but won't admit it.
yes you are... that isnt gay.
You and Ryan Seacrest, I guess.

The metrosexual look and attitude is not my thing, I like my man to look and behave like a man!
    no your not.

more guys look after themselves these days. its good
no prob wit it..you don have to be embarassed
No, you are not the only guy! Many men get their nails and eyebrows done. It makes them look well groomed. I do my husbands all the time. Nothing wrong with looking neat and clean.
do what you want to, look the way you want to.

if you want to be clean and managed,

    then good on ya.
No, alot of men are like you. Nothing wrong with wanting to stay healthy.

Today it's called metrosexual, meaning a man who likes to take care of himself.
no...you're not the only one :-)
    Yes it is good...
my boss does too and his wife is smokin alot of straight guys do this.
    lol fixes????????

    lol its very metro.
no. if anything it is good that u hav good hygene!!
Well, you're probably not the only one, but I'm definitely not in your club there.

Filing nails? How much? I might use the nail clipper to file a little, but not usually.
Nope youre definitely not! And girls WILL notice if you have nice hands and no mono-brow :) good on ya!
ok the eyebrow thing is a bit 2 metro(gay) but i do file my nails but only cos i play classical guitar.
yes and it helps impress girls ;-) and moisturising your face helps too .. guys who take care of themselves attract attention
I've found that filing my nails makes them stronger.

I trim my eyebrows because they get sorta bushy if I don't.
no, my boyfriend is the same , guys like to look good too its normal
I don't do anything with my nails, but I do trim my eyebrows. I hate bushy eyebrows. It is as bad as having clumps of hair growing out of your nose!
umm yeah you probably are. but that's okay, there's guys out there for you.

My hamster needs his nails filed down but hes never liked to be picked up so we dont handle him..?

is there anything i can put in his cage that when he runs over it it will file his nails down? We literally cant pick him up cos every time you touch him he rolls onto his back and squeaks but he comes up to us if we sit near the cage and licks our fingers so he just doesnt like to be touched and never has fr the whole year weve had him. I'm, really worried about him, i dont want them to grow so lkong that it hurts but i dont know what to do, i cant take him to a vet because the vet wont be able to pick him up to cut his nails, please if anyone knows of anything i can put in his cage that is safe and will wear his nails down when he runs over it please let me know.My hamster needs his nails filed down but hes never liked to be picked up so we dont handle him..?
Hi take your hamster to the vet and let the vet trim his nails or file them you can also do this with cutting your hamsters teeth. The vet will do it for literally no money as it is a 1 minute job. You could put sandpaper on his wheel or in the cage. Can you take your hamster out of the cage in any way?? If you can then you could sand his nails your self on sandpaper.

    Hope this helps

    Amy :)

    My question

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>My hamster needs his nails filed down but hes never liked to be picked up so we dont handle him..?
If he has a wheel you can get sand paper and stick it in the wheel. Sand paper will help file down the hamsters nails. If he does not have a wheel then stick sand paper down somewhere in his cage.

I hope everything goes well with trimming your hamsters nails!
Think a hamsters nails do grow long but not unbearably for them, their lifespan is only usually around 2 years so don't cause it any stress or harm trying to cut them, if they are that bad you should take them to a vet, don't try it yourself as you may cut a toe off, blood vessels run in the nails of all small animals so you have to be very careful when cutting their nails
If you don't pick him up he will never get use to being picked up. I use to have a hamster i use to pick mine up every minute and he use to love getting picked up just try and pick him up if you do it so often he will get use to once hes use to it then do his nails. Hope this help abit
This sounds weird but this is the best thing to use, CUTTLEFISH! it really works they love it they scratch it and nibble it which will nor his teeth down. seriously you cant get anything better

How do you categorise filing your nails?

top drawer - fingers and thumbs

In regards to taking care of Cockatiels, can I file their beaks slightly, I've learnt to clip wings&nails, but?

have noticed recently that 2 of my Tiels (have 4) that 2 of them have really pointy sharp beak ends, is that something that is done in grooming Tiels/Birds, filing the beaks a bit? And if so, how is it done? Can I just use a buffing type file, I wouldn't think a course one would be very comfortable for them, the 2 that have the sharpest that I am concerned about are the babies, their both over 6 months now, Clover was born last year in December and Chloe was born this last May and they seem to be getting longer (the beaks). By the way, I do keep stones and sandpaper type stuff in their cages to chew on, and they chew quite regularly, but the beaks are still really sharp, A Tiel that was born with Clover in December that I gave to a friend, his beak is starting to curl slightly under, what's the story on that? Is that normal? In regards to taking care of Cockatiels, can I file their beaks slightly, I've learnt to clip wings%26amp;nails, but?
Some people do have the beaks of their parrots gently filed to dull the point a little. This must be done very carefully though since the beak is living tissue with blood vessels and (probably) nerves. Its a bit tricky, and one has to be gentle with a very light touch. I've never done it, and can't picture any of my birds voluntarily sitting still for it. I would suggest going to an avian vet for this.In regards to taking care of Cockatiels, can I file their beaks slightly, I've learnt to clip wings%26amp;nails, but?
They won't chew on stones, and any type of paper isn't going to get the beak trim :)

Since they are so bad it is best to get them trimmed by a professional at the vet or at your local bird shop. Ask to watch how they trim the beak so you know how it looks

But if you give them the items they need the beak should not get so overgrown ;)

In the future a cuttlebone and calcium block are good ways to keep the beak trim, also all cockatiels should have one for calcium.

Also soft wood toys, rawhides, and cardboard work as beak trimmers. These also should be given so the cockatiel has something to play with, many people make the mistake of only giving hard acrylic toys that the cockatiel does not really want to chew on :)

Also, what is their diet? A bad diet of only seed can cause beaks to look cracked, overgrown and generally not good looking.

Goodluck! http://www.cockatielcottage.net/ is a great site and I recommend checking it out!

O! I forgot to say they will chew on lava stones if so inclined and these do make excellent trimmers.

But not all cockatiels will chew on them. In this case his other toys I mentioned should pick up the slack :)

3 Month old daughter keeps scratching her face despite us keeping her nails short as possible and filing them?

What else can we do to keep our baby girl from scratching her face? We have baby gloves / mittens, that we used on her when we brought her home from the hospital and for a couple weeks afterwords but she's already 3 months old so isn't that too old for her to be wearing baby gloves / mittens to keep her from scratching her face? What else can we do?3 Month old daughter keeps scratching her face despite us keeping her nails short as possible and filing them?
socks. We put socks on the baby's hands so that they don;t scratch their face.3 Month old daughter keeps scratching her face despite us keeping her nails short as possible and filing them?
those baby gloves that look like mittens are a god send-- my 2 1/2 month old is gaining control of her hands and is just fascinated by her face-- so yes scratches( even with short nails occur)i use the little gloves-- they have ones that have little toys on the end sorta like a puppet show for the child--with my older daughter- when she was a baby - it had a rattle inside the pad of the hand so she could shake her hand and it would entertain her. hopefully the ideas you get on here help! Good luck!
She's not too old for socks. You can cut her nails once a week or more, but be careful not to go too short.
its ok shes not to old to wear the gloves and mittens and if they dont work then put another pair on top and if that doesnt work than put the socks on her hands!

    BYE!

    GOOD LUCK!

    BYE!
You can cut her nails every 10 days. You can do so when she sleeps.Wearing mittens is only temporary solution from scratching. The best solution is trimming her nails. You should be careful that she should not hurt her eyes.
It isn't too old for the baby mittens. Some babies wear them longer than others. It's normal for her to be scratching her face.
The socks totally work- use baby socks. The scratching thing is normal, she will stop soon. Good luck!
best just using baby scissors file might make them abit rough!but mine all did it wudnt keep there scratch mittens on.she wont do it for ever.x

    Acrylic nails filed too short.?

The nail technician filed my acrylic nails shorter than I would like. Do I have to get an entire new set or is there another option? Thanks.Acrylic nails filed too short.?
If you want them longer immediately, you would need to have a new set of tips applied and the acrylics redone entirely. You can also just wait for your own natural nails to grow, and by the time you need to go for a fill, they will likely be closer to the length you would prefer.Acrylic nails filed too short.?
yes, you would need a new set.

Good Toys to Keep Bird's Nails and Beak Filed?

What are some good safe toys to keep a conure's nails and beak naturally filed down?Good Toys to Keep Bird's Nails and Beak Filed?
I agree with Skydanz. Also don't make the common mistakes that a lot of people make. They buy wood toys that are too hard for their bird (some birds will only chew on soft woods and not hard woods). Another common mistake is buying wood toys that are too large for their bird's beaks.

The cost of buying toys is so high, people buy toys hoping that they'll last a long time when actually the goal is to buy toys that your bird will destroy quickly. There are a lot of good sites on the internet for making your own toys (DIY). Also you can find more information at some of the internet groups (See Kibibi's Internet Group link below for more).Good Toys to Keep Bird's Nails and Beak Filed?
Use a pedi perch or something similar: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/bilder/hagen/pe鈥?/a>

Either put your bird's favourite toy or food or water next to it so he goes on it a lot. Make sure it is thick so the conure's nails rest on it.

Use natural branches with bark instead of wooden dowel perches. These are one of the best things to help keep nails and beak filed. Make sure the branch comes from a bird-safe tree and isn't sprayed with chemicals. http://www.plannedparrothood.com/plants.鈥?/a>

Cuttlefish bone may help with the beak plus is a source of calcium.

    Never use sandpaper perch covers.

Hope that helps. :) I don't know any specific toys that will do the trick, sorry.
Cement perches help really well with that. Just make sure they have other perches too so it doesn't cause bumblefoot!
Seed sticks are treats only. While cuttle bone is critical for the all important calcium, it is much to soft to do any good for beaks. What your bird needs for effective beak and nail grooming is one of the perches often called ';cement'; although they are not cement. Cement would be dangerous. You can find them at pretty much any pet store. Here is an example of one. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr鈥?/a>

Take note of the size of the perch as compared to the size of the bird's foot. That is the match you want. The toes must contact the perch and not wrap all the way around. That keeps the nails in contact with the rough surface. But, don't make this the only perch your bird has as it would be rough on the bottoms of their feet if it was all they had to sit on. They also need one natural limb type and one of the soft twisted rope styles. They need one soft surface so they can get relief from sitting on hard surfaces, 24/7.
It is very hard to keep your birds nails filed so it is best it you get some sand paper for your bird to walk along frequently (put it in a place where your bird spends a lot of time). your bird will bite a lot best is cuttlefish bone wooden perches for you bird to nibble on.
Try putting one of those seed stick things in the cage. hang it from the roof.

Or try cuttle fish, that's what i use :)

Can a small dog's nails be clipped and filed to where they wouldn't scratch my new harwood floors?

You can clip and file their nails, but you have to be extra careful of the small veins that are in there. I would suggest taking them to your vet or local groomer and having it done properly. If you hit one of those they bleed and bleed and can be very painful for your little guy.Can a small dog's nails be clipped and filed to where they wouldn't scratch my new harwood floors?
Yes but try Soft paws for dogs I have them for my cats, they work

http://www.softpaws.net/Can a small dog's nails be clipped and filed to where they wouldn't scratch my new harwood floors?
    yes.
don`t clip them to short because they can start bleeding !
Yes,but DO NOT TRY TO DO IT YOUR SELF!!!Take the doggie to the groomers and tell them you want to get your dogs nails trimmed,it doesn't cost much I have it done to my dog because she scratches the crap out of me.It is safer to let the pro.s clip your dogs nails because you could clip them too short and it can make your dog bleed profusely and cause unnecessary infection. It can take a long time for your dog to heal once maimed, also cause the dog a lot of pain.
You can have a vet or pet groomer trim them for you. I would also suggest putting baby booties on your dogs paws to help keep the nails off of the floor.. that is if the dog will allow it...
go to a pet shop and have them clipped for no more that 5-10 bucks
Any size dogs nails can be clipped and filed.

You can do them yourself or take your pet to a groomer.

A groomer has more experience and can do a bette job.

Unless your dog will sit and stay
If they are very long, you need to clip them very frequently (once a week or more often) in order to get the quick (vein) to recede.
there are caps for cat nails that aren't declawed. maybe it would work with a small dog? you can't clip/ file too short or you'll get the 'quick' of the nail and will bleed and really hurt. which means good luck ever cutting them again.
yes, you can clip them short and have them filed. you can also purchase little rubber ';thingys'; that go over the dogs nails to prevent scratches. they are available at pet supply stores or ask a groomer.

Filing your dog's nails instead of clipping them?

Has anyone tried using an electric drill or electric file on their dog's nails instead of clipping? My mini is literally karate chopping at the lady when she tries to clip his nails :)

What brand do you use and what type of drill bit?Filing your dog's nails instead of clipping them?
These people who have answered that its cruel have no idea obviously what you are asking about. The type of drill your are looking for is called a DREMMEL and it's sold at home depot, walmart etc. As for the specific head to use there are tons of websites that list the actual sanding disk type with picture. Just keep the grain of sandpaper very fine and go slow until you and your pooch have adjusted to the new system.Just google dog grooming with dremmel. For those of you who don't get her question it is the same type of small drill that esthetician's use for manicures! I have seen many good results from this and it keeps the dog calm and happy. Best of luck.Filing your dog's nails instead of clipping them?
My sister gets her dogs done with a drimmel tool.Files them down nicely.
Dremmel, any of the sandpaper drums will work fine. You do have to be careful as the nails can get hot, so don't use it on a nail for very long. I do one side of all the nails and then go back and do the other. If you grind off the shiny outer layer of the bottom half of the nail the quick will draw back faster.

Many dogs prefer the dremmel to the clippers.
You should be carefull with your dog麓s nails because some of them might have blood veins. My aunt has a mutt, and the vet can麓t clip her nails because there are too many veins in them!
my friend uses a ';grinder'; especially made for dogs, basically an electric file to grind down the nails as her dogs hated having their nails trimmed too. Maybe check out some pet supply websites.
The only problem I had with the Dremmel was the smell of the ground nail dust... most unpleasant. I wore a surgical mask.
Boy, I've had to clip nails at a doggy care place and some dogs WILL NOT have it. Probably because someone previously clipped the quick. I know they make electric files but I seem to remember that you have to be careful with those too-- I think you can burn their pads if you aren't careful. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

I've found that I can usually clip my own dog's nails when she's drowsy (or even asleep) You just nip the tips so that the vein will retract and eventually you'll be able to keep them shorter.

Another technique is my own invention but I've found that it works every time. I prop the dog's back against my legs, and pop both of his paws up onto a stool or ottoman-- whatever you have. Then I lift one paw and do those nails---he can't lift the other paw because it's his supporting paw. Then I reverse the process. This has worked every time for me, but my dogs are larger than yours. Don't know if this makes a difference. Good luck!
You'd use a drill on a dog? That's appalling. What if the drill slips? You won't have to worry about the dog's claws ever again.....
Ciipping is much faster and some dogs don't like the sound of the electric file, I have four dogs and I clip all of their nails, two great danes and two dachshunds. You just have to be careful when you trim them, if the nails are clear you can see the vein in the nail, if they are black don't clip any shorter than the curve of the nail, if you clip it too short there is a product called quick stop that will stop any bleeding, and it is possible to even grind them too short. If you start this process when they are puppies they get use to it and won't struggle, I started trimming puppy litters toenails when they were four weeks old and continued trimming them right up until the day I sold the puppies.
I also use a dremmel tool to file my dogs nails. Just make sure you stop if you see a drop of blood well up (this is right before you hit the nerve, so it doesn't hurt them, but if you keep going it will). Take it slow, and get your dog used to the noise the dremmel makes.

  • My rat's nails are overgrown do you have to file them?

Hi, my rat is over two years old now and she has a tumor but we have been told that she isn't in pain, she is eating, drinking, getting along with her three cage mates so she doesn't have to be put down.. But recently she has started to smell more so i suspected that she has stopped cleaning herself. I sometimes see her oldest cage mate and sister cleaning her. But today i got her out and there was some dried blood and scratch marks. Then i examined her nails and they have gotten a bit too long and are staring to curve and the end. All four my rats always groomed there nails and kept them tidy and short by them selves but now she has stopped that too. I have heard that you can file there nails with a speial file. If that is true then were can i get one ansd if it is not true what shall i do about it. They also had this stone thing that was suppose to trim there nails it was a pink swing but as they got older they stopped using it and they don't use the stones that just go on the floor. So if anyone had any advice for me please help me. Thankyou. My rat's nails are overgrown do you have to file them?
    Hi!

If you aren't experienced in clipping ratties nails, I really really suggest you take her to the vets.

Ratties nails have blood vessels in them that start around half way down, at a very very specific spot - if you cut to that part, ratty will probably either bleed to death or be seriously ill and/or damaged.

Vets usually clip ratties nails for free so just give them a ring and organise an appointment - it'll probably be with a veterinary nurse. :)

Another quick note - ratties tend to smell when they aren't well. I'm not sure why - but when my ratties are ill, they start to have quite a pungent smell.

Good luck!My rat's nails are overgrown do you have to file them?
hi jessica. i just read your post about your little girl having a tumor :( i lost both of my little girls to tumors. the last one passed away about 3 weeks ago. for some reason the females are prone to mammary tumors because their estrogen levels are so high. generic tamoxifen mighthelp shrink it

put sandpaper on the shelves, it will naturally keep the nail down, also, that pink swing thing, if you can, just put it on the ground where they walk most, or rig your swing to be close enough to the ground, and right under the water bottle.
You can trim her nails with a nail file, or you could put a brick in the cage. I keep a brick under the water bottle in my cage. That way, the girls have no choice but to use it, and it keeps their nails filed down quite nicely. Good luck with your senior citizen girly.
Take it to a vet and ask it to file your pet's nails for you. The vet should help.
Believe it or not there actually are rodent nail clippers at pet stores. That should solve the problem
take the rat to the vet they file animals teeth and nails
best thing i've found for my rats is to get REALLY fine grit sand paper, place it under their food dish and water bottle every time they walk on it they're filing their nails down a little at a time. you only need to keep it in there during feeding time. place the sand paper under their bowls when you go to refill them and leave it in there for about 1-2 hours afterwards take it out and repeat the next day :) you only need to do this for about 3 days and she'll be fine.
oh that's sad:( poor little girl.

you could try trimming her claws yourself but you have to be very careful you dont get the vein inside her claw. if you do, it could get infected. i usually have someone help me by feeding my rats their favorite treats and then i trim their claws. sometimes they wont sit still, sometimes they will. it will save you a trip to the vet but if you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself then i would definatly take your baby girl to the vet.

    good luck!

(week old) when can her nails be filed/cut? and Preventing diaper rash?

Hi Im curious about when it's best to file/trim my week old's nails or when do most people wait to do so? And is there anything I should be putting on her buns to prevent/help with diaper rash or irritation? A friend of mine told me vaseline..(week old) when can her nails be filed/cut? and Preventing diaper rash?
there are all kinds of baby nail clippers, they will scratch themselves if there nails are too long, they have a lot of uncontrolled jerky movements.

Preventing diaper rash is really easy, make sure you get all the poop, and they don't sit in a dirty diaper too long, and should have a dry tushie before putting back on the diaper. Vaseline is fine, but I use ointment when ever I see a little redness.(week old) when can her nails be filed/cut? and Preventing diaper rash?
After my son was born the nurses at the hospital told us to put vaseline in his diaper, not directly on his bum and for his nails i would bite them off myself but only when they where long and he was scratching his face. Once he was about 6 weeks old I used a file then at about 2 1/2 months I used the baby nail clippers
OKay, with my daughter i always kept mittens on because she would accidentally scratch herself. But after a couple weeks i used the little baby file on her nails really slowly and carefully and then when she was a couple months old i trimmed them with the baby cutters...you have to be really careful because they will just rip and can tear. I know some moms who bite them instead..but i could never do that.

    well hope think helps..
You can trim them ... filing them can be quite hard because of how soft they are. I cut my son's when he was about 1 week old. I suggest doing it when your baby is sleeping.

Vaseline works fine ... I usually used Vitamin A%26amp;D.
Yes, you can cut now, just be careful. I recommend doing while she's sleeping. And vaseline (many hospitals use it) is fine, use diaper rash cream if she gets a rash
for the babies nails just cut them when they are long and they keep scratching their face..as for the diaper rash vaseline works fine or u can wait till u have to take ur baby to the doc and ask him/her and they usually perscribe u one
Bite her nails off. It's the safest and easiest way. My daughter is 11 months and I'm still biting them. I tried to trim them once with clippers and pinched her. I probably won't use those again till she's 2!
I used to just peel off my little girls nails cause they where so thin, till her nails started hardening then i used baby clippers! Vaseline is good for nappy rash.
Vaseline works perfectly fine. When the nails seem long cut them.

How can i get my hamster to file down her teeth and nails?

My hamster is coming up for one and she has loads of wooden blocks and mineral stones in her cage and I regularly feed her carrot and she still seems to bite me. When i first got her she never used to bite me and I handle her every day so its not like shes lost contact with me. I thought maybe the reason she was biting me was because her teeth are getting too long. I always wash my hands before handling her aswell so it isn't as if my hands smell of food. Also how can i get her to file her own nails because i've noticed their getting long and i dont want to have to take her to the vet to get them done if they get too long. How can i get my hamster to file down her teeth and nails?

put a block of wood [ buy it from petco/smart just to make sure its animal safe] and it will knaw on it and its teeth will get filed down. with his nails, you either have to learn how to clip them without cutting the quick [the red/pink part inside the nails] for it is filled with many nerve endings and will hurt him if you cut it.

OR take him to a vet and have his nails clipped, it should be extremely inexpensive.

    good luck%26lt;3
Put a rough surface like a granite rock for her to climb on in her cage to solve the nail problem. Hamsters usually regulate the length of their teeth by themselves, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. You should also make sure that your soap doesn't have a scent that is very strong or that could be appetizing to your little hamster. You should also consider the possibility that she isn't fully tamed. Does she seem to be aggressive or hungry when she bites you?
sound to me like your doing everything your supposed to do, hampsters do bite sometimes, but she could have a dental problem that is preventing her from grooming herslf. DO NOT PUT HER IN A BATH. they have dry shampoo if she needs cleaning but if you keep her cage very clean they will clean themselves, the cage needs cleaned daily for one if more than one in a cage, 2x a day
I'm not sure about the nails, but I do know that she isn't biting you because her teeth are too long. it's because she's uncomfortable. when I got my first hamster, she bit like crazy. then a week later she had 2 babies and stopped doing that.
When she bites ya she's probably just trying to figure out who u r. Some hamsters figure who u r by smelling or biting. As for her nails u can put a gentle sand paper where she walks in her cage. It works.
I don't know about hamsters but my guinea pigs love to chew on apple bark, you could try that. Replace it when all the bark is gone.
    get her gnawing materials

i would recommend pets at home stuff.

Is it wise to get my kittens nails cut or just filed down?

This really bothers me when she wants to be affectionate and I'm pushing her away because I don't want to get scratched? Help!!Is it wise to get my kittens nails cut or just filed down?
if she's an indoor only cat, then you should get her nails clipped every couple of months (depending on how fast hers grow). if she's an indoor/outdoor cat then you can probably wait a little longer because being outside naturally helps control the length and sharpness of her nails.

i would suggest clipping rather than filing because cats don't like their nails being messed with and clipping is quicker and easier to do. though both have risks (clipping too far can cause her nail to bleed, but it will be ok) (with filing you could jam her nail which would be painful for longer). Is it wise to get my kittens nails cut or just filed down?
I guess this is your first cat. there are nail clippers you can buy at a pet store to clip her claws. you can't file them, let the a vet show you how to do it or someone with experience in clipping. There is a web site you could visit. http://www.felinvideos.vetcornell.edv/he鈥?/a> ... they have instructions on caring for your kitty...Sorry I believe that the web-site is not correct, maybe other viewer can help you .....
Yes, or else your kittens will tear your furniture to shreds
Just filed down, getting thier nails declawed is painful for the cat. Also if they ever get out they could climb to get away from thier enemies
    Hi again!

It's a better idea to get a scratching post and maybe a spray, like bitter apple, that will keep your kitten off something you really want to protect. As far as getting scratched yourself, it will happen, but its ok. Kittens are energetic and playful. As they get older, you'll get a lot less scratches, just like they'll wake you up at night less. Try to hold her and play with her anyway. It'll get easier. If she's your only kitten, you might think about getting a second. If she had a playmate, she would go to you less(although she'd still need you), and still be happy

If you cut a claw, it will crush the claw and you risk her getting a very dangerous foot infection. I've seen this more than once and it's not pretty. It's very painful for the cat or kitten, expensive for you and, especially for a kitten, dangerous to its overall health. I have a cat now that came to me with a foot infection. After a long treatment and a lot of pain and sickness, he is now missing a toe.

So, I think it is really not worth it, but if you must, go to a good vet. Most will try to explain to you that it isn't necessary-- if she has something good to scratch on, she will take her claws down the right amount on her own. However, if you insist, a vet can show you the best way and should tell you that a sharp implement is less likely to crush a claw than a dull one (nothing from the grocery store or pet store is probably good enough),

Btw, a kittens back claws should always be left alone. She won't use them to scratch, so you don't need to worry about it.

I'm sure there are people who will file your kittens claws for you, I don't know. I can't imagine any of my cats allowing it, at any age.

Really though, I recommend a scratching post, maybe the bitter apple spray and a sense of humor. Cats and kittens have claws, they scratch. You will get some scratches and so will your home - it's kinda like breathing or licking their fur, there's no way to stop a cat from being a cat.
Either one would be fine, trim or file. It's good to get them started now so they are use to it......

By hacking palins files and e-mails, have the dem's put the final nail in the ethical coffin.?

Well it looks like from the answers here the Obama supporters see nothing wrong with stealing someones email account and posting pictures and telephone numbers from them.

Obama will do anything, lie, cheat, steal, subvert, personal destruction.

Of course that is what he taught the socialist Saul Alinski technique to power, Lie, cheat, steal, subvert, destroy personally, and then claim to be the victim.By hacking palins files and e-mails, have the dem's put the final nail in the ethical coffin.?
They don't have to hack them. They can just ask Bush for them. Domestic spying surely gathered the goods on Palin in one place.By hacking palins files and e-mails, have the dem's put the final nail in the ethical coffin.?
Her emails were all obtained legally. Otherwise they wouldn't be admissible at the hearing.
One would think so, but since the Dems think they are above the law... I don't think politician and ethics go together.
A Republican lecturing on ethics? Interesting. Nixon doesn't ring a bell, eh?

    Neither side is very ethical.

EDIT: I never said Nixon was first: I merely used him as an example that neither party had an ethical advantage particularly...

What's better for your nails? Cutting or filing?

I have a friend that insists that filing is better for your nails, because when you cut them, it bends them and makes them weaker/break. She has really nice, long nails, however since I started filing my nails, instead of cutting them they seem to split more than they used to. Which is better for them? I am having problems growing my nails because they split all the time. What's better for your nails? Cutting or filing?
Cutting your nails is better. Just cut bit by bit at a time. Not one whole chunk and trying to squeeze the clipper and do one cut. Using a proper natural nail filer and filing it one way to prevent nail breakage.

She and yourself have different nails, therefore you can't compare.

Cut your nails and if you wish to shape use natural nail filer.

Use Revita nails I highly recommend for weak brittle and split nails. What's better for your nails? Cutting or filing?
hi there, there's nothing wrong with cutting them. when people obsessivly file, they are actually doing more harm to their nails. they making tiny little spliters and breaks in their nails and that tends to cause more breaks in them. if you want your nails to be stronger and longer, i'd try Sally Hansens: Hard as Nails. its basically a clear nail polish (i think they may have colored now too...i have a light pink sparkle) and it will actually strengthen your nails and make them stay strong when they're long.
    You should cut your nails.

They sound like they are weak and so filing is just going to break them and spit them. If you cut them a little then they will get stronger, if you want to shape them then file them a little but only file in one direction. Also you can put some nail strengthener on.

they are both used for kinda different things. you should probably cut your nails first (if they are too long for ONLY filing) then file for the shape you want.

if your nails arent too long, just file them to keep them under control.
Chew them off. That's what the real humans did.
    biting your nails is better
your friend is right it si better to file them...
I bite 'em. It saves on clippers and it tastes nice.

Is it okay to file my kitty's nails?

I have a kitty that has really sharp nails. I don't want to get her declawed because I'm afraid it might be hard for her to use her litter box. I want to use one of my new nail files to file down her nails a little so that they are not too sharp, but are still long enough for her to use her liter. So is it okay to do this?Is it okay to file my kitty's nails?
They are supposed to be sharp...it's a cat. And besides the cat probably won't like you doing it so you are going to have difficultyIs it okay to file my kitty's nails?
You should invest in nail clipper made just for cats. Faster and a lot easier than trying to hold a cat and file it's nails for sure!
Your kitty probably won't like having her nails filed. Their feet, and nails especially, are high sensitive and the sensation of the file on her nails will probably drive her crazy. Instead, buy a good pair of cat nail clippers (small ones for a normal size cat)--they come in different styles (I find the ones with a spring-open mechanism best because they are quick). Then just clip her nails straight across above the wick (if you're cat has clear nails, you'll be able to see the inner nerve/blood center--do not cut that or she will bleed and hurt and probably never let you get near her nails ever again). Check her nails once a week and clip when any start feeling sharp. It's fast and she'll blunt the clipped ends down as she goes about her business all week. Usually, you don't have to clip a whole lot off, just the spikey ends.
yes, its okay to clip a little, just the tip, on a white claw you can see where it turns dark, do not clip past that, the feeling would be like clipping your nails way to short, you know how painful that can be. Then file gently. If its a tiny kitten filing should be all you need. Glad your concerned
LOL......have fun trying to get her to let you file her nails!! The thing to do is......hold her in your arms/lap (with pillow to protect your legs), push her nail out so you can see the white ';line'; inside it. Then, clip the end of the nail WITHOUT going back far enough to get that white line. That's the blood supply, and if you nick/cut that, she'll bleed, and she won't stay in you lap..(or come back for more). Her nails will be blunted, but she'll still be able to use her litter....even climb, as long as she still has some nail. They'll get long/sharp again in a couple of weeks and have to be done again. As long as you don't hurt her, she should let you do it without too much trouble. Good luck.....
Don't file the claws, you'll damage them so they start to splinter, which will be painful for the cat.

Use a nail clippers and ONLY cut the tips, where it's not pink. The pink part has a blood supply, if you cut into it it's extremely painful and will bleed like crazy. Only cut the white nail part, and don' t get too close to the pink.
i have 2 cats and i regularly trim their toenails using a standard toenail clipper just like you would use on yourself. when you do it use the trimmer sideways to the nail not straight on as cats have curved nails and it hard to on the nail straight on. do not cut down to the quick or the cat will bleed slightly. and do not declaw
Get one of those special nail clippers, they are sold at pet麓s stores. I clip my cat麓s nails since they were kittens, now just be careful, cut the white part (only the tip) not the pink part or it will bleed. Since you mention she likes if you touch her paws it shouldn麓t be difficult. The advantage is that she麓ll get used to getting her nails clipped, and they will grow in a square shape, not so sharp. Make sure you give her something nice, like a cat biscuit or something. Don麓t file her nails, cat麓s don麓t like it, they get desperated. Trust me, I麓ve tried it.
do not file cats claws down as they splinter because they shed the outer layers every now and then. if they are sharp (like little needles) i know they hurt. i clip my cats and kittens claws with human nail clippers put them so instead of layinf flat they are on their side then gentlely push on each toe and just trim the ends once a month and don't forget the dew claw on the side of the front legs. you can buy special clippers but i find for young cats they are too big and some adult cats don't like the sound they make. i clip 3 kitten's claws and 4 adult's claws. also get a scratching post as this keeps claws in good shape without ruining furniture
no its not alright to do so because your are making her defenseless. cats need their claws to be sharp for defense, regardless if their only kittens or older
yes. we had to do that to my cats Arby and Tango. Make sure you don't file too low. and DON'T declaw, whatever you do.

Perhaps once a week? When growing natural nails. How many times a week should they be filed into shape?
They only need shaping once a week if you're trying to grow them and they're healthy. If you break or splinter them etc they need filing smooth and you'll have to take the others down to match the broken one or you'll keep breaking the uneven ones as well. Use a nail or hand cream to help them grow stronger and wear a clear basecoat as this helps prevent chipping and protects the nail from weather. When growing natural nails. It depends on how fast yours grow, but somewhere between every 5 - 9 days should be fine--or any time you get a rough spot, nicked edge, or anything else which could lead to a tear or break.

Remember, detergent is the enemy of natural long nails, so keep lotion near the kitchen sink to replenish was gets washed away.
depends on how fast they grow, how long you want them to be, and on accidents ;-)

given that you have a certain length and want to maintain it, you need to file them at least once a week - I have to do mine every 4 to 5 days.

when a nail breaks, I shorten all nails, so it won't look too odd. and then I grow them to the length they used to have.
I would file mine once a week but sometimes might not do it for a while and my nails are still fine. I only really file my nails if I break one or when they start to get too long. I generally file my nails square as they are stronger then.

2nd of all i would believe my eyes because i know the devils real....but ain't no devil in hell that im gonna bow down to...especially file his toenails

  • Can i file my cat's nails?

It is just soo hard to cut her nail even if she is asleep she still notices and is just too difficult! Would it be ok if i just file them? Can i file my cat's nails?
It would be much easier if you take her to the vet. It would also help towards your saftey and the cats. Can i file my cat's nails?
Yes you can, I do all the time to prevent my cat from distroying couches and such. Just be sure not to get to close to the pink part of her/his nail because the closer you get the more it will hurt her/him. Thats also why when cats get declawd they get put to sleep so they dont feel the pain of their claws getting ripped out. You can also try clipping her/his nails just be careful if he/she starts meowing that means it hurts her/him
If you think cutting the nails is bad filing would be worse Plus you will split the nail down to the bed. I suggest if you can't do it take it to your vet or groomer and have them do it for you.It is cheap like 10 or 15. dollars. Try this. Get your cat in your lap and sit in a chair or couch

next to the armrest. Now get her all relaxed by stroking and stratching her. Then slip in her gently between you and the armrest. Now gently

hold her place with your body and take hold of her paw press down on the middle gently and the claws come out. Quickly clip the sharp ends off.If she struggles and you only get one paw done then leave the second one for another day.Another trick is to slip the cat into a pillowslip up to her neck and leave the one paw sticking out.It is best if someone else holds the 'cat inthe bag' while you clip the claws.I have 6 cats and I clip their front and back paws every two weeks by myself. Once they get use to the idea you will not give up and it has to be done they will let you do it. Be firm but gentle.
I wouldn't even try to file the nails and she probably wouldn't let you anyway. I would take her to a vet groom shop or a place where they do grooming. Someone said you could split the nail and you don't want to do that, so I would pay someone else who knows what they're doing to do it.
I just saw this thing on TV for filing your pets claws,it battery operated and all you do is put the paw into this gismo and it does the trick without hirting your cat. Look for it on the internet otherwise it could be harmful if you cut the claw to far down,it will blead and hirt it.
How would filing be any easier? Wrap her in a blanket with her head out and have a friend hold her facing you. Pull out the paw you want to clip and clip away. If she still struggles then bring her to a vet or groomer and have them trim them for you.
You're supposed to file the nail after you cut it. There is a mechanical nail file I've seen on TV for pets. That would be effecient. You should start playing with her feet more %26amp; rewarding her so that she won't mind so much.
get soft paws. theyre nail caps that you clue on their nails. idk if that would work though because you can't cut them. take to the groomer. the vet is to expensive and a nice groomer might do it for free.
it just be easier to take her to the vet, i tried doing it to my dog but it takes forever!
    Take her to a vet.

    For her sake and yours.
no no bad idea let her do it her self
    why not

As i file my dogs nails, will the quick move back?

I have a doberman who has hated getting his nails clipped since he was a puppy. His new VET won't clip his nails because the last time she tried he got a little snippy with her, and now she says she can't because the quick is up too far. She told me i needed to start filing them down. So i bought a drimmel minimite and have started to use that, which he doesn't mind at all. My question is, as i use it will the quick move back? And how often should i sand them? every day? once a week? I'm not doing much at one time, just a couple passes over each nail. Any help would be great. As i file my dogs nails, will the quick move back?
When you're trying to move the qwik back, you can usually see it if you look at the nail either dead on, or some dogs have light colored nails that you can see it through. Grind down to the qwik (as close as you can get without nicking him) and then leave it for two days, then rinse and repeat.

Also, it sounds like your veterinarian is a chicken who shouldn't be in the field of dogs. Find a new one who isn't afraid to get bitten for the love of her profession.

PS: During that two day period, I wanted to add that walking your dog over concrete surfaces will also help to force the qwik to retract away from the edge of the nail, so try to take your dobie on walks in concrete areas if you don't already.

Can u like file a shih tzus nails?

thank you for your answersCan u like file a shih tzus nails?
Yes you can file them. There is this new thing called the Pedi Paws and it is super. I use it on all of my clients. They sell it in stores now. I found one at Ride Aid and Bed, Bath and beyond.

It makes filing your dogs nails a lot easier, and it makes the nail smooth. Can u like file a shih tzus nails?
Yes either by hand or using a dremel tool for grinding them down. It would be better to first clip them then file. I use either free cheap emery boards or using a glass/crystal file works far better than plain boards.(they are better on ppl nails too) If you chose to grind them, be sure to keep any of the dog's hair out of the way. Hair from their ears, face or feet get caught extremely easily so pin back %26amp; use an old sock/hosiery on foot %26amp; push nails thru it so only they are visible.
getting them clipped is not better, in my opinion, it puts pressure on the sensitive nerves in the nail, filing is very good to do. I used to sit and file my dogs nails and then I got a pedipaw and it works great and he doesn't mind it. Some dogs are scared of it because it is battery operated and the noise scares them though.
Its better for them to be clipped. Using a nail file your going to be there for ever just filing it down.
Yes, You can! But getting them clipped it better.
Yes, they made something where you could file any dogs nails
No, you have to perm them.

Is there any way to file or at leats dull or clip my rats nails?

they are shard hurt and make me itchyIs there any way to file or at leats dull or clip my rats nails?
you can do a number of things

    1. Get an old coarse but not broken brick (no sharp edges) and place it under their water bottle (so that they have to step on it to take a drink)

    2. There is a special kind of liner(similar to sand paper) you can put on the inside of the wheel that will act as a file when they run on it. (make sure not to leave it in all the time as it can rub their poor little feet raw.)

    3. Give them a branch that is rough like a bird branch that they half to climb on to get up a level.(no Pine, Apple is good.)

    4. If that still is not enough get a friend to help hold the rat and just take off the very tip of the nail with a pair of finger nail clippers. holding the rat in a cloth can sometimes help calm the rat.Is there any way to file or at leats dull or clip my rats nails?
I clip my rats' nails. I used to use human nail clippers, which they hated because I had to grab the foot to put the nail into the clippers.

Then I discovered that the tiny scissors on my Swiss army knife work much better, because instead of having to put the nail into clippers, I can open the scissors and approach the nail from the side. Since the scissors are more maneuverable, I don't have to grab and position the rats' feet, so the nail trim is much less upsetting to the rats now (they usually don't even struggle).

(Note: Use really tiny scissors with thin blades so you can see what you're doing - the scissors on a Swiss army knife are perfect for this. If you use regular scissors with thick blades, you can't tell how short you're going to cut the nail, and you'll probably end up hurting the rat.)
I've owned rats for the past 6 years and have asked this question myself. If you want to clip your rats nails, please take the time to get someone else to help you. get your friend to hold the rats upper arms up with one hand and sit the rats bottom in the other so his/her legs are sticking out. now you with any small animal nail clippers you can buy at most pet stores, hold each toe and only clip the very tip because going too far up will hit what's called the 'quick' in animals nails, if you hit that it will be very painful. Hope this helps =)

Best of luck with your rat.

    ~Lady Lisa~
To wear your rats nails down, try putting a brick in the cage-- and place where they walk most, like under their water bottle. This should wear them down farely, but if it doesn't, you can clip your rats nails. Click here to see how: http://dapper.com.au/articles.htm#clawcl鈥?/a>

    Good luck! :)

P.S. If you don't want to do it yourself, I'm sure a vet will clip their nails. ;]
Get some sand paper or a small brick and put it in a certain area of where you rat goes often that should file them down,

also in the morning when their most tired and sleepy gently file them down with a emery board in gentle saw motions Slowly.
Find a clean piece of cinder block or rough rock and place it in their cage. Some put it under the rat's water bottle so whenever the rats go to take a drink they are filing their nails at the same time. Usually does the trick. :)
i clip my rats... it is tricky. but i catch them in the morning when they are tired and don't want to put up a big struggle. i use a little nail clippers, hold there little feet and just clip the tips off. just be careful!

Should you file the corners of your nails??

Or not?Should you file the corners of your nails??
No you should not file down the sides of your nails because it weakens them. You can file the corners a little bit but not too much because it can weaken them too.

Here's a video demo of how to file %26amp; buff your nails properly: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-file鈥?/a>Should you file the corners of your nails??
Yes, If you don't it won't curve like a natural nail. Your suppose to file the whole tip of the nail.
It depends on the look you're going for.

I think a square nails looks more manicured than a round nail.

  • What's the purpose of filing your nails?

I'm just turning to that age where i'm starting to get into beauty/skin care more so im wondering what's the purpose of filing your nails do? Does it like make them stronger/weaker? Or make them more

square-y looking? Any help is appreciated! :) Thanks so much! What's the purpose of filing your nails?
It's for shaping them. And if the chip or get little snags, you file them back into the right shape. What's the purpose of filing your nails?
as the name suggests , it just files them , gives them a shape and makes them smoother ... and also it ensures nail growth evenly the next time ....
The purpose of filing your nails is to shape them, depending on how you like them square round more oval etc ...
It is easier to shape them and it's so there not so pointy that they snag on your clothes and things.
it is just easier to shape them the way you want instead of fingernail clippers.
i usually file my nails after i cut them so that there's no sharp edges

it also shapes them nice :-)
to much filing damages your nails though

    just shape them ok
to make them neat and pretty

I need help with filing and cutting nails, I was used to getting manicures not anymore. What do you suggest?

    do home kits? :)

i also suggest you buy a nail file and a nail clipper.

those are basic tools for your nails :) and its all you need for simple basic nails.

but if you want manicure do-it-yourselves, id say buy clearish nail polish such as mauve, clear, or which ever you like, with those white things that cover the top of your nail so when you apply nail polish, it wont affect the tip of your nail.

    -hope that helped! :)

My parrot wont let me file his nails... What should i do?

I have a congo african grey (I LOVE HIM TO BITS). He doesnt usually bite me, or fight me... But his nails are gone eXXXtra scratchy and are hurting me and he just wont let me file it (yes with an emery board).

Whenever i try he gets really angry, starts biting me and shouting me (in his birdy sort of way). I dont wana fight with him or upset him, but i have to file his scratchy nails...

Some tips would be really appriciated... ThanX!My parrot wont let me file his nails... What should i do?
Consider taking a few moments of free time daily over the next week creating a game with a towel. Play with your companion and pull the towel around on the floor and let your bird go after it. It may take sometime, but as you play the bird will get used to playing in the towel, and will soon realize that it is actually quite fun. I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO WRAP YOUR FRIEND UP. NO, NO, NO...

But soon your bird will see that fun games will take some of the attention from what you are doing while in his/her space meanwhile creating a fun experience, creating trust. Slowly take that trust to the next level by petting his/her feet, lightly sliding the toes between your fingers. Soon a new trust will emerge, and that too can become a game. See where I am going? You need to take little steps along the way and before you know it the emery board will then too become a ';game';. That method took 5 days with my macaw and only three with my red lord amazon. They too will see the benefits of getting the nails done just after a few quick scratches. The sharp tips are even too sharp for them and they can actually hurt themselves just trying to get that itch. If you allow this too long they will attempt to bite off the tips themselves and this can cause a vertical crack up the side of the nail, then you may have a serious problem.

Before you know it, your bird will sit on the door of the cage holding up a foot calling for your services.

BobMy parrot wont let me file his nails... What should i do?
we have an exotic bird shop in town that does nail trims for a great price, maybe you guys have one too. if not, this is what they do i watch them a lot.

one gal holds the bird in a hand towel protecting her hands, and some times they lightly and very gently cover the birds head to keep it calm.

the second gal clips and files the nails while the first gal holds the bird.

they are usually done in a few seconds and they give the bird a treat %26amp; the birds forget about it very quickly.

if you can find someone to hold your bird with a towel while you trim that would work. just teach them how to hold a bird without hurting it.

hope you find something that works for you.
Do you have one of those perches that are rough to help file down their nails themselves? We got one for our conure and put it near the front of the cage - where he spends a lot of time so that he'd be on it often enough. It has definitely helped to keep those nails not so pointy!
I had to make nail filing into a game for my CAG, have you got a concrete perch in the cage? this should help if not.

other than trying to convince him that it is fun to have his nails done, if he is ok with being wrapped in a towel this could be a useful tool although you would probably need nother pair of hands.

( the towel thing can be introduced as a game too but will take a while to get used to if hes never done it before )

if he wont be convinced that it is a good idea then a trip to an experienced avian vet may be a good idea.

African greys are very sensitive and may hold a grudge if you force him on it. mine once ignored me for 3 days because i pushed him too far too soon with the towel game when he was younger.

i use a site called parrotlinks where the forums are fantastic, there are probably loads of people with ideas for nail filing on there , have a look.

maybe try to do a tiny bit once a day for a few days to make it eaier for him ? good luck

Tips and how to for filing your nails?

i just quit biting my nails and are now paying them attention, so i need to know the right way to file and any other hints. thanks.Tips and how to for filing your nails?
Get a three step file with a rough, light and buffing side to achieve smooth nails. While filing, swipe in one direction to avoid breakage and get strong nails. If you want hard, long nails, buy a nail treatment and apply to your nails. Tips and how to for filing your nails?
Make sure you dont go back and forth like a saw. This can damage your nails. Only go in one direction. I also use a clear nail polish to make my nails shiny if that helps?
when filing, make sure you dont go back and forth like a saw

    this can damage your nails

file in one direction only ... so go from the outer corners to the middle ...dont go from the outer cornor to the middle then back again

acetone and an orange stick. soak your nails good %26amp; long before peeling them off with the stick, though. nail clippers work too.

  • Filing short nails?? other nail help.?

    1. so i just cut my names off cuz i wanted them to start growing from sratch. i was wondering whether i should file them now or just wait until my nails get longer to file them. is it ok to use a metal nail file also?

    2. when my nails DO get long they usually break. cuz i do alot of thing with my hands. what should i put on them. or eat or watever to make them strong?

    3. does any one suggest gel overlays??Filing short nails?? other nail help.?
try hair nails skin vitamins, if they real real short you don't need to file now, just polish them and keep them polish 3 coats, then put nail hardner on them two coats keep them like that and they will grow and you would see the diffrence,

I wouldn't recommend uv gel nail cause I have some on now and I really don't want my nails to break, but I still go get my nails done and they do some fly nail design and Im satisfied, but then again I';m not because they are not mines but they look good so just let your nails grow.

use/ you can get these at wal mart save some dollars and reason I said don't do the gel nail yeah they are yours but when you want them off they going to be brittle.

How to keep a baby's nails properly trimmed and filed...?

My baby is 3 1/2 months old and he scratches himself, badly, all the time. The thing is, he's way too old for those mitts, they are either too small or he rips them off in 2 seconds. And I keep his nails as short as possible, but they are still sharp no matter how much I file them down. I am doing his nails every day now! Has anyone else dealt with this? What eventually worked for you?How to keep a baby's nails properly trimmed and filed...?
I have a 5 month old with the same problem... he scratches that bad that he looks like a cat's attacked him. The only way I can prevent this at the moment it to put socks on his hands, they're bigger than the mitts and they never seem to come off..... I hope I could help. How to keep a baby's nails properly trimmed and filed...?
Try cuticle scissors, very good-quality cuticle scissors. You'll have to be careful, but you'll be able to trim them quite short, much shorter than you would with a nail clipper or those rounded, thick-bladed nail scissors.
First off, you trim them while they are asleep. The other thing, I use a nail buffer, the white one, as you don't really have to 'cut' anything. Works like a charm every time.
I was doing my sons everyday up until he was about 5 months he's only seven months now and do them every 2-3 days, I catch him best when he's napping .
keep his nails clipped thats all you can do
I trim my son and daughters nails about every other week.
put mittens on him little things you put over the hands and cut them with baby nail clippers
Does he have eczema or something?

It sounds like he is scratching himself an awful lot.

Smooth away works great for me. Make sure that you try to smooth away the hair slowly in a circular motion, don't just rub your skin because you'll get irritated, and don't use a lotion or anything before you use smooth away.Hav u eva tryd '; Smooth Away ';? Gel nails.. If I file them will they get damaged??

I usually get Acrylics done but I heard that Gel nails are more natural looking and they damage your nails a little less.. I realized that I want them shorter now so I was going to file them down.. but I'm not sure if it will damage the gel?? I usually do it with my acrylics then just put a clear top coat over and that's it.. but I'm not used to Gels...Gel nails.. If I file them will they get damaged??
Hi, you can file them/shorten them yourself but only use a file, not clippers! that will crack the enhancement...also, tilt your file a bit so it's underneath the tip more, this will prevent you filing the nice glossy top part of your new nails. Failing that, just go back to your tech - sure she'd shorten them for you as she'd rather you be happy! Also, neither gels or acrylics are any worse for your nails, it's the technician that does the damage, if she over-files your natural nail or uses a file that's incorrect - this is a huge myth that the product damages your nail, it's always the technician not the product! or the wearer, if they rip them off or pick at them!! Hope this helps xxGel nails.. If I file them will they get damaged??
No problem! Glad I could help, withlovebymel xx

Do you have real 'gel' nails? In other words, did the tech use any liquid and powder at all during the application process? Or did she use gel, which looks like the name - its a gel with a hair styling gel-like consistency? I'm just making sure that you have real gel nails before I answer this question, thats all.

If the tech used any liquid and powder on your nails at all during the application, then you have acrylic nails, and not gel - no matter what the tech called them. Sometimes the tech will apply liquid %26amp; powder, and refer to the powder as ';powder gel, Well, there is no such thing as powder gel. Gel is just that - gel. It is not a powder, ever.

So, assuming that you did get real gel nails, then the answer is this: Normally, the last coat of gel which is applied, and cured (all the layers are cured individually), this is usually a product which 'seals' the gel onto the nail. And the tip of your nail is included in the sealing of the nail. If you were to file them, you would obviously break this seal and that could lead to the gel layers seperating from one another. You don't really want this to happen. I would suggest just going back to the salon, and asking them to shorten them for you. Its easy enough to do, but after they have shortened them, another coat of 'sealer' would have to be applied, and cured under a UV lamp for about two minutes -depending on the type of sealer used. This can't be done at home unless you have a UV lamp designed for use with gel nails, which most people wouldn't have.

Just go back to the salon and ask them to shorten them for you. It shouldn't cost you anything for this, BTW. Its a fast and easy thing for a tech to do, so it should be free as long as you go back to the same place that applied them to begin with.

    hth
Well, i guess you can just call up the place you got your nails from, or if you done them by your self, call a store to do with nails and ask them if it will damage them. Also, i think it would be better if you do that because some people just post over here anything they like because the want to earn points.

So i guess that is the best thing to do! :)
