Recommendation for nail clippers/ files?

We currently have a pair of spring-loaded nail clippers ($10 from petco), but our large breed puppy is frightened of having his paws touched after surgery on his paw. Our current clippers aren't so good because by the time we've aligned them with his claw, he's flinched and moved away...

Looking for your recommendations for something quicker/ better to cut/ file his nails with that I can buy in the US.

Thanks so much!Recommendation for nail clippers/ files?
I'm a groomer and I prefer the red handled scissor type of trimmers, because it doesn't make the snapping noise when you trim the nail. Remember that your breathing changes, your voice goes up when you begin doing this....your dog is detecting a bodily change in you because you are frustrated. Sing, don't react to the paw being pulled away. I would suggest a grooming noose and a belly strap to keep your dog teathered while doing this. Pull the leg behind the dog, like a horse having its hooves done.

Don't ever let go....don't even talk to the dog. Hold on, don't trim for a week....when the yanking stops give it a very small treat, a calm hand on it's back, move to another leg, stops yanking, treat, small pat....

no nails for one week....always do the trimming in the same spot of the house, no talking, breath....and I guarantee it will cooperate. How do you think groomers and vets do it?Recommendation for nail clippers/ files?
Get a pair of nail cutters recommended for large breeds. This is a must so you can cut quickly %26amp; get the job done.

You will need someone to hold the dog still while you are doing the cutting. The person holding the dog can assist you by holding the leg you are clipping the nails on. This will lessen the jerking %26amp; pulling away.

Took at the nail from under the pad. You should be able to see where the quick is this way. It is better to cut it too long than too short. If you do cut too short use one of the following to stop the bleeding, flour, baby power, talc poweder, quick stop(used by groomers) or any kind of power will work.

It is also important that his feet be handled when nothing is being done to them. By handling the foot %26amp; toes this will condition him to be more acceptable to when you actually are cutting his nails. Don't make it a game while handling his feet %26amp; toes. This will make matters worse.

Remember to turn the dogs foot so that you can see the back of the nails. On white nails it is easy to see the quick but on black nails it is not possible to see the quick through the nail %26amp; by turning the foot backwards you have a better chance of doing it right. Don't panic if you cut too short %26amp; it starts bleeding, just have some kind of powder ready to apply to the bleeding nail %26amp; continue cutting the rest of the nails. Get the job done as quickly as possible %26amp; release the dog.

Handle those feet %26amp; toes as much as possible when nothing is being done to him. This will get him acustomed to his feet %26amp; toes being touched.

Best of luck.
no brands to suggest, but try the round edge so anyone wont get hurt by its point, and make it sharp..

also.. pets, DON'T EVER cut the nails too short, it really hurts them. so just cut the sharpest edge, the rest of nails don't cut it.

though it's a nail, they bleed when over trimmed. i've tried once, when i didn't know my cat would cry for a night for over trimming one of her nail.

but mine, i just use simple scissors, not clippers as i don't want my pet to get hurt. just be careful with the edges.
Since he just had surgery on his paw, I suggest letting the vet cut his nails just this once until the wound heals.

Or you can get his nails clipped at Petco for $8. Or any groomer in town will clip his nails.
A pet store recommended rubbing the flat side of a butter knife on our dogs feet to get them used to metal touching their feet. But we learned concrete is easier, lol. Take him for a walk on concrete. It's a natural nail file, a good 30 to 45 minute walk everyday is good for both of you. If he can exercise being he's had surgery, I don't know the details.

Good Luck =)
It sounds like the clippers you have are just fine....maybe try a different approach with your pup. I've found that wrapping them up in a towel or blanket depending on the size of your pooch... to where only one paw is out at a time...tight enough to where they can't wiggle too much, but obviously loose enough so they can still breath, and to where they can't see it coming....works wonders. Good Luck!

I have a Golden Retreiver and an English Bulldog.....I actually sort of lay on my Golden Retreiver, he's pretty mellow though. And use the other method on my Bully. She's a little tank, but I can still manage her. When I take them to the vets I have to admit I take them up on a free nail clip while I'm there...lol.
I use a dremel for my dog. It took her some getting use to, the sound it makes more than anything else, but its quick and i think easier to control how far you file the nail down.

Can I file off my acrylic nails?

They're really bothering me. I filed them to be shorter because they are just annoying me so much, but I'm wondering...since I don't have any acetone or money to buy it, if I can just work a nail file on them, then buff out my original nail so it wouldn't look as bad.

Would this work? Can I file off my acrylic nails?
Yes, but it is not recommended. Are you being serious when you say that you cannot afford acetone? I mean, a small bottle of acetone only costs $2 or so. Just a thought...Can I file off my acrylic nails?
Not speaking from personal experience, but you have to be a REALLY good filer. You could do it unevenly, it'll take some time, and you can file your real nails to make them uneven.

Not like us guys care anyway. The last thing we look at on a girl are her nails.

Please answer mine:

http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind鈥?/a>
Yes you can file them, but it will take some time. Once you get past the nail tip it will become really hard. I suggest going to a nail shop and letting the nail tech remove them. Most nail shops only charge $5-$10 to remove them.
sure. it will take a while, and you will probably go through a few files, but it will work.

It would work- a very fine one- watch your cuticle
Well if you know how to use it. Otherwise you can file too deeply and ruin your nail and it'll hurt like crazy until it grows back out.
    Definitely....

I make special effects teeth and masks and my teeth are all made out of the same grade acrylic used by nail salons...

I use one of the smaller coordless dremel tools to sculp all of my acrylic.... you can also use it to polish the nails with a bit of pumice and water....

My boss nailed a girl at work today in front of me and now I have to file a report. Help!?

My boss was fixing an industrial taping machine for our satin poly ribbon production team, and in the process of restarting the machine a nail went flying and hit a girl standing nearby with a nail from the machine.

    LMFAO .

this just made my awful dayy into a great one . (:My boss nailed a girl at work today in front of me and now I have to file a report. Help!?
Yeah, you can also make a report to OSHA.
    Very disappointing!

Round, square nails dont look good on my hands.Poll-- girls do you file your nails round or square?
i file my nails round. my nails are really long so when i used to file them square i used to scratch people not on prepose but yeah but now i've been doin them round and i don't scratch people as much as i used to. i like them better round.
i file the tops kindof square-ish but then round out the sides so it's not a sharp square lol. but i agree with the other girl who said square looks good with french manicure=]]
When they're short or mid-length, I think they look better squared. But when I've had them on the long side, they looked better a little more rounded. French manicure tho def. looks better squared!
square - round is kind of old-fashioned.

My mom %26amp; i have a major disagreement on this topic...
    square but rounded edges.
    Square nails are SO ugly.
square, but i cant seem to figure out how to get them that way so they stay round.
If I ever get the time, I do them round.
i dont file my nails i really dont know how to

round..french tips look cute squared though i think =]
round I don't like the french nails to much.
    I don't file my nails.

Does anyone know the name of that new gadget for pets toenails? It files nails instead of cutting them.?

I saw a commercial on TV advertising this new tool that files your pet's nails instead of cutting them. It costs $19.95. Did anyone get the address or phone number?Does anyone know the name of that new gadget for pets toenails? It files nails instead of cutting them.?
If it's for dogs, then yeah it's a dremel, you can get one from www.petedge.com but you should have a groomer teach you how to use it so you don't hurt your pet. Also yeah alot of dogs don't like them, so ask a groomer about how to introduce you pet to the noise and feeling of the grinder.Does anyone know the name of that new gadget for pets toenails? It files nails instead of cutting them.?
I wish I could remember the name also. I just saw the commercial. 1-800-564-6400. Peticure $29.99 plus shipping
Be very very careful - if this tool gets caught in the fur, or slips, it will cause a serious injury. perhaps better left to an experienced groomer.
The one I have seen is called : PETICURE at Peticure.com

I was interested in getting it as well but the price I saw was $39.95 So I used my Dremmel instead....works like a charm!
Thats funny I want one for my bunnys but i dont know the4 name if it im really sorry

I had a front tooth that was minutely longer than the other, so I filed it down with a nail filer ?

It seems to have worked and I'm so much happier. Is this okay? I only filed the end of the tooth...and like I said, I only shaved away a minute portion of the tooth. I had a front tooth that was minutely longer than the other, so I filed it down with a nail filer ?
Probably OK but it may just happen again if the length discrepancy was due to wear or function against an opposing tooth. There is often a reason one tooth is longer than another. It could simply be the way it came in but more often it is related to the tooth it chews or hits against on the opposite arch. This is very common in front teeth.

It takes an understanding of how teeth function to determine why it is longer but you can look closely in the mirror and put your teeth edge to edge while moving them around and sometimes you can see what I'm talking about. You're probably fine though and you found out it doesn't take much adjustment to make a tooth look and feel better.

Make sure you send yourself a bill for the job well-done!I had a front tooth that was minutely longer than the other, so I filed it down with a nail filer ?
Dentists do that all the time. If you feel any pain or other discomfort, see your dentist. But you should be fine. Like I said, Dentists do it all the time, just with high-tech equipment that works like a nail file would.
as long as you didnt hit the nerve in your tooth, you should be fine. i dont know i its smooth or not, but if it isnt, you might wanna get that dealt with.

my macaws nails are geting long and sharp when she iis on my shoulder her claws dig into my neckHow can i file my macaws nails?
The safest thing to do is to bring your macaw to a vet and have them show you how to trim its nails. You could potentially kill a bird if you cut a nail too short and hit the quik. A bird can die very quickly from bleeding. How can i file my macaws nails?
    Hi,

Clipping the nails of a Macaw can be hazardous to your health.... lol ..... If you have never done it, then take him to an Avian vet Http://aav.org and watch and ask questions. Do this a couple of times before trying it on your own, if you still want to...

Note: It takes 5lbs of pressure to break a finger

it takes 15 to take it off all together

A B%26amp;G can put 300lbs in one bite.....
i would def seek a vets help with a macaw, if u suddenly try and clip his nails he might get scared and nip in self defence, they can take of a finger if scared enough lol goodluck :) check out http://www.parrotcentral.net for good parrot info
don't file we use dog clippers on Hawks, Eagles Falcon's and Owls bet they will work with your guy. Dont cut to deep just clip the point just like you would do a dogs

New ideas for tear-free nail filing?

I need to file my daughter's nails TODAY. I've been putting it off because she has already been having a hard enough time just dealing with teething.

She is almost 9 months old and hates to have me hold her hand still. She knows all my tricks to try to keep her distracted and happy whilst nail filing, and she is just not buying it anymore. :(

So what are some of the things you all do to get through nail filing/trimming without tears?New ideas for tear-free nail filing?
Is there anything you can do instead of filing? Maybe you can just use clippers instead. Nail filling is something that you have to get used to. It reminds me a bit of running fingernails down a chalk board.

If she is old enough you can take her to a beauty supply store and let her 'pick out' her own nail file. Pick two or three, hold them up, and let her pick one. My son was really good at this around 6 months. She'll probably try to grab them all, but you can coax her into one. You can also try letting her file your nails, so she can get used to it a bit. If you can get her with a friend of yours, you can have your baby watch while someone files your nails, or while you file someone else's nails.

Another option could be to just leave them alone. They will get a little scraggly (more so than now), chances are she will scratch herself, then you can jump right in there and file them. She is old enough to start to understand if you don't file them she might hurt herself. Letting her see that happen may be a good teaching lesson.

You can also try 'new' ideas of keeping her distracted. I know candy and sugar is bad, especially for a 9 month old, but it may work. If she can have a sucker in one hand, it may be new and cool enough that she'll let you file the other.

Remember that tears are okay. Really your daughter doesn't have to like it, she just has to do it. It could be a valuable teaching moment for that to. Not everything is going to be fun, but you're going to try your best to make it okay, and she just has to deal with it. She isn't old enough to tell you why she doesn't like it and that she doesn't want it done, so she cries. That's her opinion and she is entitled to have it. If she cries, comfort her, but clip and file them anyhow. She'll be fine.New ideas for tear-free nail filing?
Really, the best time with babies is when they are asleep as they won't be moving around nor aware of what is happening, often this is not practical. In the case that won't work, television for a short amount of time would be okay. I really don't recommend television for kids under 2 years, well, ever, however.... What has worked in our house is the boys get to watch a little Sesame Street while clipping their fingernails, it only takes about 15 minutes with both of them. Sometimes whatever works, doesn't hurt them, and is expedient, is the best route.
i use clippers, and for whatever reason, ruby lets me clip and holds her hand still. so i may not be much help. but if ruby resisted, i would clip MY nails while she was watching and then try one of hers. show her how i clip mine, then say ';your turn!'; like it'sa big, fun game and clip hers. if you haven't tried that approach, give it a run. good luck. those baby nails are killer, aren't they? like little razor blades!
I used to do it while my daughter was sleeping. That seems to be the ';thing'; to do after reading the other answers. LOL She is three years old now and doesn't mind it at all.

If it doesn't work for you while she's sleeping, then maybe do your nails in front of her and show her it's nothing to worry about. She might open up to it after that.
I always do it when she is asleep, toes and fingers. It is impossible for us while awake! Even in her sleep she snaps her hands and feet away! But that is the only way I can ever accomplish that task! I used to put Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on, the colors would put her in a trance. Then I could cut them but, that was short lived!
Yea I have the same answer as everyone else. I useally trim her nails while she is sleeping, after I giver her a bath, when her nails are a bit softer. once in awhile I can do it while she is feeding, but thats when she is holding on to my fingers the whole time.
Hi - I also use the nail clippers on my 3 month old while he is sleeping. I have also been successful in cutting and filing his nails while he is awake - usually right after a feeding though.
my son won't stay asleep to let me cut them! it would wake him. I usually manage about 3 at a time at bath time, as we have play time on the change table first and his dad distracts him. i file or use cutters.
Just use nail clippers and do it when she's asleep if she dreads the nail cutting process so much. It helps to push the pad of the finger back to avoid any accidents.
I either file his nails when he is sleeping or my husband doe it while I'm nursing (but I saw that doesn't work for your little one)
hmm I dont know I always cut my baby's nails with a baby nails clipper while she is sleeping and havent had any problems, takes 5 minutes tops.

but she is only 10 weeks so maybe it gets trickier? :)
I trim my baby's nails when she's napping. It's easy to do that way. I have tried filing and clipping but neither work as well as the baby scissors I have.
At that age, I always trimmed my daughter's nails when she fell asleep for a nap.
I cut my 10 month old son's nails while he is sleeping.

Why does my cat lick nail files?

Whenever me, my sister, or my mom are filing our nails, my cat goes nuts. It isn't when clipping nails, painting nails, only when using a nail file. He tries to take the file from us and just starts licking it all over. He tries to like the nails we have filed too. None of our other cats do it, only the weird one. Do you think it is because he likes the taste of the file and nail? Or maybe he just likes the texture of the file?

Random question I know but I was just filing my nails and he stopped playing to come steal my file. Has anybody else's cat done this? Why does my cat lick nail files?
Your cat is just doing his own weirdo thing. All cats do something weird, which is what makes cats great! Why does my cat lick nail files?

Ha ha, it's funny that I find this tonight because LAST night, my kitties were chewing on mine..(of course I was teasing them with it and they were playing with me). I was kind of hoping they would drag their pokie nails across the file a time or two too! Cats seem to all have something wierd. One of mine is obsessed with chewing on paper, another with plastic bags.
That's just a curious cat XP

Maybe he feels kinda fun licking it, cat's are so weird! That's why I love them XP!!!
it could be the texture of it. my dog licks stuff that are rough as well, kinda weird but as long as they aren't hurting themselves its fine
they lick it becuase it's rough like their tounge it feels like thier mothers it's relly cute if u think about it my kitties tigger had an absesoin with my blush bursh one time i was digging tourgh my amke up box and she walked right over and took it out of my box and ran off with it LOL she was a charecter but this one woman froced me to give her away i hated it i miss my baby
I don't know, mine likes to rub against scissors and likes their shinyness and metal I think, I don't know, different cats like different things
Well i would say he likes the taste or your powdered nail pieces.

Nails filing: How did it shine?

I have that normal emery board - the pink is the roughest surface, then white and the gray which shines the nails. I'm wondering whether the shine/glossy looking nails come naturally as a reaction of the ';gray'; part ';cleaning'; the nails surfaces or, did it come from a chemical on the ';gray'; part which transfered and coating the nails. Thank you.Nails filing: How did it shine?
I don't think there are any chemicals in that part of an emery board - I think it just very gently buffs away the surface of the nail to give it a nice sheen and polish and it brings out the natural oils in your nails which gives it that glow. You shouldn't buff too often though, as it can make the nails a little weak.

Try Wal-mart for the mini eye shadows and nail polishes, they also have lip glosses in the Bon Bon line. I'd check at thrift stores for plastic bowls to soak their nails in. You may also check at Bath and Body works for a large bottle of nice smelling lotion or two and transfer it into some travel bottles so they could have individually bottled lotions. I'd also check dollar stores in your area for these things as you can sometimes get a mini set for $1 per girl.Where can I get nail files, toe seperaters in bulk for cheep?

Trim or file stick on nails?

I am about to apply some stick on plastic nails and I will be using them for playing guitar as my natural nails are weak. I need to take about half the length off them. It says on the pack they can be filed to any size or shape but can they also be trimmed before filing? Or would trimming damage them? It would be a lot easier to get them to the correct length if I could trim or clip them down a little. The nails I bought are Kiss Active Oval.Trim or file stick on nails?
my girlfriend wears plastic nails and she always cuts them first then files them, she says it is a lot easier to cut them to the length she wants rather than filing them first.Trim or file stick on nails?
Okay, if you are taking alot of the tip off, clip. It will not damage as long as you are neat, and careful with them.

    Then you can file them.

But when you file make sure you sorta file out the rough edges that will be created at the tip and the top.

  • Peticure electric pet nail files - worth the money?

We recently bought one of those Peticure electric pet nail filers and all 3 of our dogs even more afraid of that than regular dog clippers. They put up even more resistance...My two Papillons don't mind it at all, even turned on (they seem curious and excited about it), but then when we get it near their nails, they panic. Our Aussie x Mountain Cur mix won't even let us in the same room as him with it turned on.

Professional nail files - what grit?

Hi All, I need to get a variation of nail files for my nail technician course but I'm unsure which ones to buy. What grit is a light, medium and coarse file? Is it best to get a file just one grit or different sides? I prefer the sponge files rather than the emery boards. Any help appreciated.Professional nail files - what grit?
Here are a few links to help you decide what you need in terms of files. Personally, I use Entity Beauty files %26amp; buffers - for the most part anyway. Well, when I use files that is. Mostly, I have been using an electric file for the past couple of years and love it. Shaping %26amp; finishing the nail is reduced by about 50% using an e-file. But really, that is a whole different topic in itself! E-files are quite expensive, and one should be properly trained on them or they can easily do more damage than good. Back to Entity Beauty now... Their Shiner is unbelieveable! It shines both natural %26amp; acrylic nails quick, easy, and fast. But, of course, you must progress from a lower grit file to a higher grit biffer - then finally to the shiner itself. But this is true for any brand of files %26amp; buffers. I usually use a 150 grit to take down acrylic, a 180 grit to refine it, and then move to a 100-180 grit buffer to remove deep scratches before finishing the nail with a UV gel topcoat - or sealer. If I was going to hand file the shine on, I would use the 220-280 grit buffer after the 100-180 Perfecter as the final step prior to using the shiner. Buffers from this company, and many others have two sides - and two diffferent grits. It's important to perform the filing and buffing in a 'progressive' manner. In other words, use a lower grit file first, then a higher grit file, then move up to a low grit buffer, turn it over and use the higher grit side on it, and so on.

For gel nails, buffers are not really necesary, but one can be used. Usually, I just use a 100/180 file for gel filing since the UV gel topcoat, sealer, or finishing gloss will fill in any scratches anyway. Plus, a UV topcoat, etc will not go on as smoothly when the nail has been buffed out too much. This creates a finish on the nail which is too smooth for the finish gel to adhere well to, and apply easily without imperfections.

Anyway, here are the links. Just click on the item you are interested in, and a page will come up with detailed information about the particular file or buffer. The Tropical Shine files are not bad at all and I know quite a few techs who use them. Its really a personal preference type of thing, and it comes down to using whatever ones work best for YOU.

    I hope this helps!

PS: Entity Beauty has excellent acrylic products, and their Studio brush is the absolute best brush I have ever used. It's quite pricey, but it lasts forever (well, almost forever, LOL). You must be a student, or a licensed beauty professional to buy from Entity. Tropical shine is available in Sally Beauty, and anyone can buy from there. I think Entity is a far higher quality product though. But then, that's only MY opinion, and nothing more.

Also, the rectangular zinc files/buffers at Entity last longer than the other ones shown. I bought some of them and yes, they were great files. But they wore down very fast. The absolute longest lasting file I ever used are Tammy Taylor's Purple Terminator files. My gosh, those things just do not wear down! They really last a long time. But, I don't think her other files are really anything special. And her acrylic products? Well, I won't go there...

clip nails? What do I use to file down a dwarf bunny's nails?
Use a good pair of clippers, be sure not to cut past the quick (dark line in the nail) . If you lay your bunny on his back in your lap, he will go into a light trance which makes it easier to clip. If you are at all unsure about doing it, call a local pet groomer and find out what they charge. Most around here don't charge for nails just to get you to shop in thier shop. If they do charge, it shouldn't be more than $5 or %26amp;10.What do I use to file down a dwarf bunny's nails?

Will sand paper help file my hamsters nails down?

he has some in his cage, its just the stuff you put in a budgies cage, and its not too rough so it would hurt his feetWill sand paper help file my hamsters nails down?
PUT A ROCK IN THE FOR FFS YOU RETARD! HAMPSTERS ARE PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF DOING THEIR OWN NAILS!!!!

anb btw hampstir needs a new cage NOT a budgie cage! Will sand paper help file my hamsters nails down?
If you mean would it sand them down by him walking on them then yes. It does depend on how long they are though - if they are too long already it will take too long to wear down by the sandpaper. It is a good idea to get them clipped either professionally or by yourself if you think you can do it without causing it any pain. The sandpaper in the cage is a good idea as a preventative measure so long as the nails aren't long enough to be causing a problem right now.
You can use the sandpaper - make sure its not completely covering the cage bottom, so he can get off of it if it bothers him. Some hamsters will also eat the sandpaper which probably isn't healthy for them.

Other ideas - rocks! put a flat one that can not roll tip or otherwise move and squash your pet where he has to walk on it for food and water. If you have a ';hamster play pen'; or something similar that you can put on a hard surface (like a screened in back porch with a concrete floor) while you have him out of the cage to play that can help too.

A brand of wheel called the ';Wodent Wheel'; has an optional nail trimming track thats really effective. Just be sure to follow the instructions for how long it can remain in the cage.

If you decide to take on the admittedly intimidating task of tackling nail trimming on your own, baby human nail clippers are really helpful. Having the common sense not to try to cut all of the little nails at once also helps - start with the longest nail and if thats the only one you get done that time its ok.
Hahahaha wow. Not a lot of experienced hamster owners?

I dont know why people bother posting,if they have no clue what their talking about.

Anyways...Yes sand paper is fine to use. The really low grained sand paper. I would not suggest putting it in his cage though, because if he finds it an enjoyable chew toy,and ingests the grains..it can cut up his insides..and kill him.

Let him out of his cage once in a while..maybe in an enclosed area where he wont run off,and let him run around on it.

Always supervise him when your using it. Dont leave him alone with it.
sounds allright but check the back of it and see what number is on it (what grade it is)

for an animal i wouldnt use anything less than 180 - even so be careful! you dont want to hurt your hamster!
no thats animal abuse leave his little claws alone his feet are fine the way God made them. keep your hands off his paws poor little guy.
yes, sand paper will help to keep his nails blunt, if they already are long i would trim them or get a vet to do it.
it will a bit but it will be hard to i suggest going to the vet to do it.
just take him to the vets and get his nails cut
yes, but be careful not to hurt him
yea but its hard, try using a file instead
    hahahahhaa probibly :)

Finger nail filed too thin after acrylic nails applied?

I just had my nails done yesterday. I got the acrylic tips and then sealed with the gel type stuff. As the manicurist filed now my nail before she applied the false tips, she filed it too thin and it started to bleed. I have now removed the nails and the one that she filed too thin is very sore. Since I have removed the nail, I have put peroxide on it and antibiotic ointment. Should this be enough, or should I go to a medical doctor?Finger nail filed too thin after acrylic nails applied?
Just keep it clean and cover it during the day to keep germs out. Uncover it at night though so it can breathe. It should be ok if you keep up with the antibiotic ointment, but if it doesn't start to heal within the next week or 2, i would go to the doctor.

Did she do it with the electric file? I hate those things. :( next time you get your nails done tell the person doing your nails what happened so they will be careful not to repeat the mistake of that person.Finger nail filed too thin after acrylic nails applied?
Whatever you do, don't go back to that salon! At this point all you can do is wait it out. Allow your nails to grow out and heal. I would keep using the ointment.

It shouldn't hurt to have your nails done. If you go to a reputable salon and not a budget salon, chances are you won't have damaged nails like what you experienced.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
You could go to the Dr, but there's not much they can do. When I had my solar nails removed, they were very thin and painful sometimes, and all I could do was wait for them to grow out. I did buy a nail strengthener at the drug store and kept a layer of it on to help. I also never did dishes without wearing gloves.
I agree with previous answers that what you did should be enough. Nails and nail beds are tough and can take a lot of abuse. keep check on it. before u know it, it will be grown back and the soreness gone!
That should be enough, but if it still hurts after a week I would go to the doctor.
It should be fine, but never go back to that salon again. Obviously, they don't have a clue about doing nails.

    Phobia of Nail Files?

Hi, I have a fear of nail files. I can't stand the sound, or the texture of them at all, it's just giving me the shivers talking about it. I don't like sandpaper or anything with that texture, either, and the sound makes me tremble. I was wondering if there was a name for this phobia, and if someone could tell me. Thanks.Phobia of Nail Files?
I don't think it's a phobia. It's merely a noise you don't like; it's a noise others don't like, just like chalk on a chalkboard. Remember that the sound usually comes from the file being moved back and forth, and you can hardly hear it, it's more of feeling it. While the proper way to file nails is in one swipe with the softer sanded side which doesn't make noise.Phobia of Nail Files?
this is very common.. don't let it worry you.

i hate long and square it looks fake make it natural with short rounded it looks better like that oh and nice taste in polish :)Should I file my nails short and round, or keep them medium-long and square (more details below!)?
well like someone said it depends on your cuticle but it also depends on how sturdy your nails are. if u have healthy nails long can look really pretty. so if your nails are up to it, i would go for long and square. good luck and hope it works! oh btw thanks for answering my question! :D
Your nail shape should match the shape of your cuticle, as for length, that is up to you and what you are comfortable with.
long and square look nice if ur nails are all even Try long and square it also looks waaaaaaaaaaay better than medium and square good luck
If you're cuticles are not really there or short, keep the nails round and short, and I would have white tips, that would be perfect for easter. Good luck;) It'll be cute either way
well i really like square shape for french tips!

but for that color i would go with short and round or medium length and round?!?!?
    Medium-length and a bit rounded.
Alittle short not too much but squared.
Long and round looks best. (:
short and round that wuld look cute %26lt;3

    Nail Filed Down Too Far?

While getting my nails filled at a nail salon the woman doing my nail shaved part of it down to the skin. I ended up just getting another woman to put a base coat, clear nail polish, and the gel on top after cleaning it with alcohol. Is that safe? Will it heal? and how long will it take?Nail Filed Down Too Far?
Yes it will heal. As for taking 10 days..?? No, maybe if you want a significant growth, but otherwise nails grow everyday, it will feel better within a couple of days.

To help the nail grow faster put a dab of lotion on the nail and rub it using your finger for a few seconds. This stimulates blood flow in the cuticle and nail bed helping to promote more growth. For example, if done everyday for about 10 seconds on each nail you can have twice the amount of your normal growth in a week. Trust me...it works, I'm a nail biter and when I have an event coming up I usually do this to help them grow fast.

In the mean time keep a band aid on it during the day if you can see the flesh, you can put a little Vaseline on or just leave it bare. At night keep the band aid off so it can heal.

Nail polish will sting. There have been times when I cut too far into my cuticles when removing them, or there may have been a hangnail I ripped too far, exposing under my skin and nail polish never made it infected. It stings when applied but it almost acts as a barrier, if you leave the nail polish on the skin. Or you can put some liquid band aid on it.

Top coat is fine.Nail Filed Down Too Far?
    OUCH!

    That stinks =(
    Yeah it will heal..

    Might take a lil while..

    Maybe 10 days..

thats a lil less then mine took...

    if it burns at all..

i was told to put vasaline on it
it wil heal anoda nail shud grow.if it burns or hurts then put vaseline on it.

Dog nail trimming/ filing? And other general grooming tips needed

I have a 4 month old CavaChon (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise mix). I'm finding out that it costs a lot of money to take him to the groomers (I expected to spend money but I was hoping to find tips on how to do things myself). I've seen ads on tv - they claim it's easy to use, it's a device that files the nails, an alternative to using dog nail clipper. Anyone care to share their experience with this? Also, how about dog hair cuts? Stores sell electric clippers, I know they come with attachments for different lenghts; for anyone with dog haircutting experience, what length/s work best for Cavachon? Thank you!Dog nail trimming/ filing? And other general grooming tips needed
I have two Chipoos (Chihuahua/Poodle Mixes). I also used to take them to the groomer but it got very expensive. I now do all of their grooming by my self at home. I bought electric clippers at PetSmart, dog shampoo, brushes, ear cleaner, etc. It has worked out great. My husband even set up a table in our basement when I can groom them. They love it.

About the nails...I just received (this week actually) a new device to file their nails, the Peticure. I have read that clipping their nails is not the best for them and mine hated it. I previously had been filing them with a file instead of cutting them but that took FOREVER! I have used the new Peticure which is just like one of those electric nail sanders you can find at PetSmart/Petco, etc exepct it has a safety guard on it to protect their feet and nails. So far they don't mind it and it works great!

    Hope it Helps!
well, i have a cavalier king charles spaniel, and i'm just going to say one thing about the nail clipping! he's a GREAT dog, everyone loves him, great temperment, gets along perfect with our black lab, and is 1 year and like 2 months old. we have a little ';machine'; that clips the nails of dogs (so much faster and is safe etc. etc.) and he FLIPS OUT! like, the black lab doesn't care at all, and just lies down in his bed, but we have to hold scampy (the cavalier) and he moves all around and cries and we can't do it at ALL! we have tried a couple times, keep in mind we got him september 23rd 2007, and now its august 11th, 2008 and we have only successfully clipped his nails once... and that was when he was under anestia (for being nutered, i know i cant spell anything!) and the vet did it!

so all in all, my little story is just saying that i think you should have the groomers clip his nails! you could try it yourself, but i think it will be much more successful if you just pay for it to be done! thats probably what we will do with scampy soon!!

    good luck!!

  • Cats and nail files.?

Whenever I file my nails one of my two cats will come running over, her eyes fixed on the nail file. She then howls until I hold it out to her and then she then starts licking off the filed nail dust.

One of my friends cats does this - does anyone elses? And more importantly, does anyone know why they do this?Cats and nail files.?
I don't know why they do it but I have three cats who actively seek out and destroy my nail files. I used to keep them on my beside table but they disapeered quicker than I could say 'nail file'. They've even been known to jump up onto the high shelf in the kitchen to steal the nail file. As for filing my nails I have to do it behind the locked bathroom door!!Cats and nail files.?
My cats, the same thing. I guess they r interested in the noise and like destroyin nail files.

My cats would go crazy when they saw me getting the emery board out. As far as I know all cats are like that; it's almost like catnip to them. They will sit up on their back legs and try to pull the file out of your hand, and actually bite it as well as smell it. And it isn't just the nail file. After you file your nails you can let the cats smell your nails and they react the same way. I've often wondered about that.

I think it's the calcium smell they like, sort of like fish bones.
You are doing something that takes your attention away from her.
my cat is mesmorised when i paint my nails, he just stares and purrrs. gonna try filing my nails in front of him now x
LOl thats funny. My cats(current %26amp; past) have never really eanted to lick off the nails dust but theyhave ALWAYS chewed up my files if they found them lying on the floor (not the metal ones mind you but the emory boards)....chew em up %26amp; put lil teethy holes in em ....irritating to me but funny too!! LOL
My suggestion is that cats are attracted to the SOUND the emery board makes as you file your nails. I have actually filed one of my cats nails as he seemed so fascinated by the sound.
That's weird lol. My cats litter tray is in our bathroom and whenever I do a wee she runs in and does one too. I think they're just odd creatures.
How would a cat know that it would be good for its claws??
Yes my cats do this too - no idea why. Might be just the roughness on their tongue. I find my nail files all over the place, Thai is the worst, I cant finish filing my nail and she takes it off me. Little tinker :-).
you probubly will never know . cats do strange things. my cats are always doing weird stuff lol

Can I file my guinea pig's nails with an embory board?

They dont need to be cut just yet, i just would like to take some of the sharpness away. Just file a little bit. My piggy is not an adult yet if that mattersCan I file my guinea pig's nails with an embory board?
This depends on the guinea pig. Try one nail, see how effective it is and his/her reaction. Continue or stop depending on these variables. Can I file my guinea pig's nails with an embory board?
I always use a nail file for my guinea pigs because i'm scared i will cut the nail down to far.

But embroidery boards are annoying and don't do the job properly but if you use glass nail files they will last forever I've still got mine after 3 years and it still does the job.

They are really hard to fine though but you can buy them off this website:

I wouldn't because this procedure could probably take longer than clipping the nails with nail clippers. so it really depends on how fast your guinea pig gets stressed. If it is really calm then it probably wouldn't hurt. I just use the baby nail clippers and it goes pretty fast now that I have some practice, and I can get it done in about 5 min. per pig. Well hope that helps!!!
i dont see why not. it cant hurt him. unless you cause him stress while doing it. that will depend on him. i have used it on my cat dog and even my parrot.

since your not cutting the nails you cant cut the nail too short and nip the quik which bleeds if you actually cut the nail. good luck
If he will hold still I don't see why not. I have used an Emory board on my dogs toenails. Didn't do a lot of good, I was using it on my Greyhound and her nails were really thick. But your little Piggy's a bit smaller, just be sure you don't hit the quick.
my guinea pig is an adult and i use a nail clipper ( for pets ) to cut its nails

Why do cats like nail files?

It probably feels like another cat grooming them. Think about it. Your cat's tongue feels like sandpaper when they lick you. Why wouldn't a sandpaper covered nail file or emery board not feel the same to a cat?

All my cats love rubbing on my nail files (I get the longer ones with two or four different grits on them). The rougher the grit, the better as far as they're concerned!

Also when I rub the nail file on the surface of the desk to play with them, it makes a scratchy sound that gets their attention. Why do cats like nail files?
It's probably the smell. I bought that rub away shaving thing, that resembles a nail file but it's an alternative to shaving. I left it on my bathroom counter and within minutes my cat ';monkey'; had brought it to me wanting to play. Why do cats like nail files?
sometimes cats 'admire' their owners, they can see you for example filing your nails with a nail file and want to use that nail file themselves. sometimes it may be that they simply are perplexed with it and so have adopted it as their new toy.

    hope i helped a bit.

  • My dog refuses to have his nail cut with clippers- would it be safe to file them instead?

I have two dogs- a two year old Papillon and a four year old Yorkshire terrier. The papillon does not mind having her nails clipped at all. Plus it is easy to do since her nails are clear.

My yorkie, however, hates having his nails cut with clippers. That and he has black nails so I've always been fearful of cutting the quick. I'm thinking that when he was a puppy I snipped it and ever since he has been a fighter when it comes to nail clippings. Even the vet cannot do it. I can manage to clip sharp tips off with scissors which he doesn't mind. But scissors are not strong enough to cut the thicker parts of the nail and they may twist and crack it.

Can I file them down instead of clipping them? It might be a bit of work, but he shouldn't mind it as much.My dog refuses to have his nail cut with clippers- would it be safe to file them instead?
On some dogs the pressure the clippers create as they close on the nail is painful. In this case, what I prefer to use both for the comfort of the dog as well as a nice, smooth nail tip is a Dremel tool.

The Dremel is a cordless, battery operated rotary file. It has a small drum on the end that is sandpaper which revolves at a good rate and it files the nail down. It takes some time for you to get used to operating it, and thus don't go for the ideal short nail in the beginning. It also takes some time for the dog to get used to it.....but they do get used to it rather quickly and much more readily than the standard nail clippers.

You can get Dremel tools marketed towards the pet market, but they are the exact same thing as the Dremel tools in the hardware department in Wal-Mart. I have had both. Finding replacement sandpaper drums is easier for the Wal-Mart brand. $20 will get you a nice Dremel.

I prefer to use these over other brands of nail trimmers as my therapy dogs interact with the elderly who have thin, tender skin. I can not afford for my dogs to have ragged, jagged or sharp nails. The Dremel makes for nice smooth, safe nails.

And yes, you are right, a dog won't mind filing as much as being trimmed. A Dremel will make the job easier on you, by far.My dog refuses to have his nail cut with clippers- would it be safe to file them instead?
How about the clippers for dogs nails, there supposed to be safe, I get my Vet to do mine, I think they do sell files for dog nails in petco or petsmart but I think they may start getting antsy being worked on that long
NO!! Don't file the nails. They will splinter and shatter. If you cannot cut the dogs' nails with a dog nail clipper, then take the dog to the vet or a groomer. These individuals have the proper cutters to do the job.
You can try a grinder (dremmel is a popular brand), but being a yorkie, you have to make sure his fur stays out of the way. You can file, it won't hurt and it will be a bit of work.
i just saw an ad for a motorized pet nail filer, im sure if you research it you can find it easily. no cutting involved and the dogs in the commercial didnt seem to notice it at all. good luck!
i am having that problem too, like i have both dogs

    only half done ?

i don't know, you have given me an idea, ask the vet, but it seems they would be too strong ? i don't really know, have to find our.
The same thing happens with my dog the vet said that the only way she can cut them for her is to put her asleep.
yep no problem, i've done it and some vet offices use a drimmle to file the nails down quickly
Consult a veternarian or an expert in a pet store.
I saw an ad on the TV once for a special nail file for dogs so other people must do it.
i might leave that dog alone, if it doesnt want to then ill leave it alone. i dont want 2 get bitten.
Take him to the Pet Groomers it works for my Shih Tzu.
u can buy a Dremmel and file the nails down, works great and is fast for a dog that hates nail trimming
Few, if any dogs on the planet, will willingly extend their paws and sit still for nail trims. Doing so violates their natural instincts to protect their feet. Filing takes longer and is actually more painful that using a nail trimmer. A dremmel on either of these breeds requires paws to be closely trimmed beforehand or the hair will get quickly caught in the dremmel head and can cause serious injury--making the entire nail trimming experience even more upsetting in the future.

Buy some powder Quick Stop from your local pet stupply store. Both of these breeds can be taught self control for nail trims. If you take control and get the job done correctly, they will become more cooperative. Both also tend to grow nails very fast and need trims at least every 10 days.

If a dog has learned that he can get away with screaming loud enough that you will stop trying to trim nails--he has taught you and not vice versa.

Here is a link that shows the proper trimming of nails.
Sure you can file them. Many groomers use a dremmel which in effect is just a high speed file.

In fact, the file might get her more used to having her feet handled and eventually you'll be able to clip them.

One other thing: I just read this in a book the other day and thought it was the most genius thing EVER, so I just have to pass it on:

One great way to get dogs to let you clip their nails is to smear peanut butter on the fridge and let them work on licking it off while you clip. (because you have a little dog, you might want to put a table up next to the fridge so you're not climbing on the floor) You just hold the dogs foot up behind them like a farrier would shoe a horse. Maybe it will work?
The only problem with the dremmel (power-tool most use for filing nails, can be purchased most anywhere) is that it makes lots of noise and can tickle your dog and you can file the nail to the quick just as easily. Veterinary behaviorist (especially the ones at prudue vet school) recommend clicker training for dogs like this. I have seen a dog go from will bite your head off if you even touch their foot to putting heir foot in their owners hand every time they want any attention. To start I would get a clicker training for dummies book and start from there ... it will be easy fun and most likely quick. Once you can clip the very ends of the nails you can take the dogs to your vet and they can show you how to not quick the nails.

What is the best time to file your nails?

Did you decide to file your nails at weekend.

When you are in the filing cabinet!

sorry! just a little joke of mine.

Can I clip and file my dog's nails w/ toenail clippers and files?

with DOG nail clippers...they are made for dogs, a dogs nails are nto the same as a humans and using a humans' nail clippers could injure the dog, I do not see an issue with a regular fileCan I clip and file my dog's nails w/ toenail clippers and files?
I can only answer if your dogs claws are light colored, because you cannot see the line of safety if he has black nails. In light colored nails, however, you can see where a pinkish tinge begins in the nail, that is actually blood flow, and if you cut below it, they can get pretty bloody and hurt your dog. You definately will need a strong pair of toenail clippers, as regular nail clippers are not strong enough to cut through a dogs hard nails. Once you cut them down, you can use an emery board to smooth them out. If your dog is black, I recommend taking him to a professional groomer. Good luck. Can I clip and file my dog's nails w/ toenail clippers and files?
unless its a small breed dog toenail clipers won't be much help for a large breed dogs nails. Get proper dog clippers they are designed specifically for dogs.
Yes you can. You may want to go to your vet or a local groomer to learn how to do this that way you won't hurt your dog. Good luck
yes you can but be very careful if you hurt them once they will be petfiried.
Use dog nail clippers.Unless it's a very small breed, turn them sideways when cutting.Proper dog clippers are best.
Get a Dremel. They do a much neater job.
    Not with human ones.
    That's what they're for.

    What does nail filing do?

I have a dumb question. What does nail filing do? nd does it keep ur nails short 4ever?????? Espicially if u filed them after u cut em??? I dnt want that!! :OWhat does nail filing do?
no, it doesnt keep them short forever. it just rounds them so they are not all pointy and square after you cut them. duh.

Will they file off the top layer of my nails for gel nails?

I've had porcelain nails before and they did that (and I hated it!)

I wondered if gel nails were a hardening agent or something? Will they file off the top layer of my nails for gel nails?
The top layer of your nail will be filed off for gel nails and acrylic nails. I'm not sure why they do it, maybe it works better if your nail surface is slightly rough. Gel nails work in same way as acrylics but they are meant to look more natural. Will they file off the top layer of my nails for gel nails?
i have gel nails now and the last time i took one off they were good as new
    no they shouldn't

What's better, keeping my nails filed rounded or squared?

i've heard that one is better than the other and that keeping them squared will make them chip less

    what's your experience?

if you have any other tips about keeping my nails strong and healthy please do tell

thanks:)What's better, keeping my nails filed rounded or squared?
round is better i feel its calssy and still sexy i hate the square ones plus my expperience the square ones easyly damadged ...plus the best thing for ur nails to be strong is lemon plus u ll never have dead skin around when u use the lemon...What's better, keeping my nails filed rounded or squared?
round... they don't easily break on the sides...and they look more natural...

but square nails look more elegant especially if they are really long.
when your nails are squared, they look more expensive
Rounded makes your fingers appear longer.
well, mine are rounded, which really stinks because I am always having a corner chip and pieces and corners and if I don't tear it off then something else will. but that depends on you're nails. I do have a tip though, every day when I wake up and go to bed I mix grins andgiggles baby shampoo with water and nail polish remover andsoak my nails in it for 2 minutes, also try coating thm with transparent nail polish, for protection.
    round looks nicer

but square is supposed to keep your nails strong
I always had long healthy nails. And nails and hair heath is usually hereditary. But I work at a nail shop and I can tell you square or rounded doesn't really matter if you take care of you nails. We use a OPI line called nail envy. This line consist of nail strengtheners according to your nail condition and it really works. You would like it, and keeps nails strong regardless of shape.
Filing your nails squared does make them sturdier than round or even oval filed nails. My personal favorite is what is call the ';squoval.'; Basically, you start by filing your nails square and softening the edges by rounding them out a tad.
l think that rounded looks better
i personally like to keep my nails rounded not squared because the squared is too unnatural
    Square nails can chip easily.
I love rounded nails and actually im haveing a sculpture of my left hand made because my moms bestsfriend friend who works at a museum wants my hand for aphrodite. So i say rounded!

    Sorry i bragged so much
dont file nails down into the corners, this weakens them! Actually having a 'sqouval' nale shape is the healthiest...squared tips with oval top(near the cuticle0.
    round.

    sqaure looks too unnatural.
I like the look of squared nails. As long as they aren't too severe, they won't look cheap. And if you are getting acrylic nails, get round. If you square off those, they look tacky instantly. You should go to Bath and Body works and invest in a good cuticle cream. Also, try to find a Sally Hanson- Hard and Strong nail polish (somthing close to that name). It goes and clear, and looks great! Plus, it works as a great base coat for other nail polishes. Hope I helped!

    Dog nail filing tools?

has anyone tried the Peticure filing thing i see on tv? i'm wondering if it's loud and would scare my dogs. is it worth the investment?Dog nail filing tools?
I bought it, and it is a little loud, but its not so much that would send them into terror.

Max is horrified of our silent vaccum cleaner, and this thing is LOUDER than the cleaner and he's fine with it. The best noise I can think to associate it to help you get what it sounds like is the static on a tv.

Its worth it. But it won't help if your dogs don't like their feet touched. My sister in laws husky is a terrible dog for nail clipping, and we thought the peticure might work, and it made no difference. Dog nail filing tools?
The grinder that is shown on TV will work just like a Dremmel tool -

The advantage of a grinder is that the nail is smooth and will not hurt the people or scratch or catch on household items. However, a grinder will not eliminate the possibility of cutting the quick - if you get too close with a grinder, it will have the same affect as if you cut the quick with a regular clippers.

The disadvantage of a grinder is that some dogs are really upset by the noise and/or the vibrations of the grinder. A clipper is quicker, but it does leave the nail sharp.

    Love this question!

The first time I saw the Peticure on the T.V. I thought ';Dremel';. I own one of the small rotary tools which has sandpaper bits. I introduced the Dremel on low speed as a sound only while I petted my dogs. After a few minutes they were calm so I tried it. It works great and they really hated the clippers but don't mind the Dremel at all!

I have a battery powered nail care gadget some one gave me but I never use it. It was too under-powered for my large dog's nails, but would work on a small dog. While a Dremel costs $50 or more the nail gadget was only $15 or $20. If the Peticure is in this range it may be a good purchase.
All you really need to do is walk your dog. The recommended walking time for a dog is 30 minutes a day. If you walk them on pavement the entire time, their nails will file themselves down naturally, without hurting your dog like clippers might.

This is the best way to keep their nails short because it doesn't cost anything, and you and your dog need the exercise.
No, it is quiet, and it is very realiable. It works great, I would tell you that it is great and it is a good investment. My dogs nails have never been smoother and they dont cratch me or the floor anymore.

    Good Luck.
yes yes yes, it works great. I got one about 1 month ago. Before this my cats and my dog hated getting their nails clipped. Not they could care less. I would recommend it to anyone.
Please visit a dog parlor or a VET he would always have the tools available....also its just a longer and harder version of the filer that women use that is use for dogs....dogs also have a different type of nail cutter
I would say dont bother. Cut your dogs nails then take it for a walk to wear down the edges. Its cheaper and fun for both of you.

Do you trim or file your cat's nails?

I adopted an adorable 11-month-old cat last week. I'm going to give her a few weeks to adjust, but eventually I'll have to do something about her long nails. Any ideas?Do you trim or file your cat's nails?
the vet or a groomer can do the first few so she's mad at them and not you.

in the mean time, handle her paws regularly.

i use nail sissors on my two cats. they don't like it but they don't wig out either. i started with just a nail or two a day when i began clipping them myself, being careful not to quick them. just take the tips. better to clip every week than to quick them once because that really hurts and they WILL rememberDo you trim or file your cat's nails?
The trick is to wait until your cat is completely tired or even better, asleep and then trim the nails using the scissor type clippers. My cat was already a year and a half old when he found me. I could tell that he never had anyone trim his nails before. It took a few tries, but now I wait until he's very mellow or asleep and I can trim all four paws in under thirty seconds and he doesn't even notice. It definitely saves the furniture. Just don't get him declawed as that is cruel and totally unnecessary. Just try what I have stated and it will make your life a whole lot easier.
I do. I had to start young, my cat just lays there while I cat his nails the other 2 want no part of it. Normally I give them treats after the ordeal is over with. Also its very scary especially if they squirm or become to radical because you can miss and hit the pink which will cause an infection. My cats also have scratching posts which help shed some of the nail. If you cat never adjusts to it you may have to get it done professionally.
I clip my cat's nails once every three weeks or so, primarily because I can't clip them down too far - she has pigmented nails so it's difficult to see the quick. I considered filing them, but given that she barely tolerates me taking three minutes to give her front toes a pedicure, she certainly isn't going to stand for sitting around while I file them.

I did consider that Pedipaws thing that you see advertised. I think it's one of those devices that sounds better in theory than it actually works. First of all, it's noisy and would send my cat running for cover. I also question how much control you'd really have taking off enough nail without hitting the quick.
We trim ours. I don't know a cat anywhere that will tolerate filing. I do agree with the other poster though. It's important that a vet or vet tech show you the proper method for trimming. If you don't know what you're doing you can hurt them quite badly. It's easy to learn, keeps them from hurting each other, and prevents ingrown claws.

We trim about every other weeks on the young cats, and about once a month on the older cats (their claws don't grow as fast).
My indoor cat yes, outdoor cats no. It can be done with a simple nail clipper and I would recommend starting while the kitten is pretty young so they get used to it. I do mine about every 2 weeks and I wrap her in a blanket (with one paw and head free) so that she can't escape. I've never needed to have a vet's help but it is hardest the first time until both of you figure out what you are doing. Good luck.
I got a nail clipper from the pet store for my cat, but he absolutely hates having his paws touched. I do it late at night when he has been sleeping for a couple of hours and is still groggy.

If you leave them be, they will chew them off, but they will still get long and hurt you if she claws.

Another option is to get the Soft Paws, which are little rubber type tips to put over your cats nails so they can't scratch with them. I haven't used them (since it seems like a pain to put them on), but have heard they work well.
I cut both of my cats' nails. You just have to be patient with them (and a little bit firm). Only do a couple nails at a time the first time or two. Now, mine let me do it without any fuss at all. The sooner you start, the better, though, because older cats are much more difficult to train!

Also, make sure not to cut the ';quick';, which is the darker pink part. That will bleed a ton, and your kitty will not like it. You may never get the chance to trim his nails again!
Yes, I clip my cats' claws about once a month... more frequently if they look like they need it. I recommend taking her to your vet to have them clipped the first time. Ask if they can instruct you how to clip them while they're doing it. Hands-on learning for something like this can be very helpful.
I got pedi paws for my dogs, but it said on there I could use it on the cat. I did, and it was wonderful! I was about to declaw him, but I know that is a horrible think to do. That machine saved him from that!
My grandma used to trim her dogs nails so I think cats will be just fine :)

RIP tigger :( i guess cats don't have 9 lives.

    July of 2008, January 12, 2009
Give her a couple of scracthing posts and encourage her to use them.

I also use nail clippers to occasionally trim my indoor cats claws.
    i clip my cats nails..

when i first got the boy cat it was very hard to clip his nails because he wouldnt stop moving.. so I wrapped him in a towel!
.6neither my cat bites her nails!
ya my cat tore up my sofa by siting and digging its long nails into it

I use a rotoring tool! it's the basic same thing as the pet-icure, only you can get them at lowe's or any hardware store, they're about half as much, and they're easier to get the replacement parts for. The only drawback is that it is a bit noisy, so make sure your pet isn't too jumpy for the tool first.
This nail trimmer is the best thing I have bought in years my dogs sit so well while their nails are being trimmed. They never cry like they did so often at the vets when I took them to have them cut. At first I had to show them it wouldn't hurt and it took one time for them to see it's harmless after that day I never had another problem with them. I love this peticure nail trimmer.
If you want to see reviews, go over to Amazon and search for the Pedicure. Amazon always has a zillion reviews. As I recall, the Pedicure didn't score so well but there are other grinders that cost about the same or less and which got really good reviews.

  • Anybody use those nail grooming tools (the ones that file not cut) that I saw on television?

I was wondering if anybody has used the new nail trimmers I saw on tv, the ones that file your pets nails as opposed to cutting them. My dog really stresses out when we cut her nails and i thought this thing might be the answer. My biggest questions are does the machine make a lot of noise and how big is the nail guard. My dog is very well trained but we usually have to take her to the vet to have it done and it will stress her out less if it can be done at home. Nail trimmers that cut the nail are not an option. Anybody use those nail grooming tools (the ones that file not cut) that I saw on television?
I personally just use a regular dremmel and it works wonders. Have not quicked a nail yet, much to my dogs joy :c)

My dremmel can run in different speeds and the low one is the most quiet and what I use on my dogs nails. I also have a rechargable type that is even more quiet than the plug in kind.Anybody use those nail grooming tools (the ones that file not cut) that I saw on television?
Why not walk your do on a sidewalks and driveways to wear down the nails. I would not use this tool because I would leave this job to a professional. Maybe your dog will not sit still for doing this because of the noise of the tools or it doesn't like to have its feet touched. I would be afraid to file down to deep and cause bleeding. If you don't know what you are doing, don't do it.
I have just recently ordered one...because my dog wont let me cut his nails.
I usually just cut my dog's nails since he doesn't mind it...but the Peticure is basically just a dremel tool with a fancy name on it. If you want the same thing for less money, just go get a regular dremel tool. They work the same way. The machine makes a low humming noise and it vibrates. But if you take the time to get your dog used to the tool...like filing only one nail a day or just turning it on and allowing your dog to get used to the noise should help out a lot. Treats are good too! Regular dremels don't have a nail guard. And I actually find them easier to work with as I can actually see the dog's nail and where to stop.

Be cautious, a lot of dogs dislike it and clipping is way faster.

I use my peticure in between clipping to keep a nice nail shape and get rid of any jagged edges.

Also, the $20 advertisement on TV is for the petite, If you have a dog over 15 pounds you need the larger peticure which is double the price.
I just bought the peticure for my dog. She is deathly afraid to have her nails clipped and the last time I brought her to the vet they cut 3 of her quicks and she was bleeding all over. Needless to say it was very traumatizing for her. I decided to give this a try and so far she doesn't seem to mind it. I haven't done all of her nails yet, but I know it will be much better for her in the long run.

I have seen guys in nail salon I dont think it should offend any one if you walk in a nail salon to have your nails taken care of the way you want it, if you can do it at home then it should not be a problem to have them done in salon it is your nail and think not of where and how you want them, every one wants to look good.I'm a guy, should I file my nails, and if so, what should I buy and how?
You don't need the world's permission to do what you want to do. If you want to use a file, use one!

    any more obvious questions?
Get an emery board from a drugstore. Trim first, then use the rough side to file initially, then smooth the edges with the finer side. I would recommend a more expensive nail file, preferably padded. If you have the money to spend on a man manicure, go ahead. It looks better and gives the impression that you take care of yourself.
Oi dont listen to the others, i`m straight an i got gorgeous nails,

use expensive emery board, all these chicks will confirm
of course you can use a nail file to file off the sharp pointy corners.

here is an instructional video. http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-file鈥?/a>
Finally a bloke who cares about his appearance!! Ignore the butt-ugly homophobes, there is certainly nothing wrong with any guy taking an interest in his appearance. Go to any pharmacy and buy an emery board. They don't cost much and you can buy them in packs. When filing only move the emery board, not your finger and file in one direction only to avoid damaging the nail. Happy filing!!!
    u shouldnt even care
Go to your local 'The Body Shop' store. They sell a 'pad' which is about 9cm long. It has 4 sides, each of which has a separate use ( as printed on each side). 1 = File nail edge 2 = Remove ridges 3 = Smooth nail 4 = Shine nail. I bought one last year and it is brilliant for nails and lasts a long time. If you are shy you can always say your girl friend has asked you to get her one. They are inexpensive to buy too.
Your'e a bloke?... use an angle grinder like the rest of us... and light your cigar with the sparks. Try not to hit your steak with the sparks though only girls cook them!

If you're stuck, a belt sander will do the trick.

    Signed... STUMPY
ewww dont file you nails just cut them your a guy god d**m it
Yes it's nice for a bloke to take pride in his appearance! (are u gay is what I'd expect from someone who probably has the mentality of a amoeba! who is probably single!!! Trim them with clippers n file them round after to smooth them! no female likes rough scabby nails touching them!
If you're gay go ahead, i wouldn't suggest it otherwise
Yes it's ok for guys to file their nails. It's not gay. If your edges are ragged after cutting them, go to the drugstore and buy a nail file, either metal or cardboard and just smooth out the edges.
    kissy kissy!
dont listen to the others. just because you want your hands to look good doesnt mean your gay... actually a lot of guys get there nails done. a lot of girls also like it better when there man keeps him self clean. they look good and it feels better than a guy who doesnt do anything or bites them if you know what i mean.... just go out and get a nail file there cheap and do the trick.
As a straight female...definitely file the nails. I hate getting scratched accidentally because some guy is to homophobic to do something that might be considered ';girly';.

You should be able to get a man's manicure kit at the drug store. It should have all the gear...clippers, files, etc.

An emery board will work...they're about $1 at the grocery store.

Start one one side and file around to the other going in ONE direction. If you saw back and forth you will just damage the nail and it could tear...making your problem worse.
Sure! File away =) I know a bunch of guys who file their nails and they look great! It is pretty easy to do. All you have to do is go to any store, like WalMart, and buy some files in the section where you would find cotton puffs and nail products. You'll have a whole selection of files to pick from. The basic cheap ones will work just as well, but you'll have to pick them up more often.

When filing, you can go back and forth, or you can file to one side. Most women who have real nails file to one side. This helps your nails not to split. The rest is kind of easy... All you have to do is stop when you think it looks good!

I'm really glad to see more men taking care of their appearance! Kudos to you!!!
yes yes yes!! you can tell allot about a man and his overall hygiene by how well groomed his hands are. and don't forget the cuticles!! my advice? get a guy manicure at least once a month -makes a huge difference. if a guy has gross cuticles or rough nails its over for me!
What a bunch of lame answers!!!

Of course it is okay to file your nails. Most nail clippers come with a small file attached to them. Of course, you cannot carry those on an airplane.

You can get a cheap emery board, or do what I do. When I go to my parent's house, my mom usually has one sitting around. it only takes like 5 minutes to do all of your nails.
I bite mine and they are all round.
Yes, definately, good grooming is as important for men as it is women.

Any standard manicure kit should do and don't forget to moisturise hands, face and body.x
Oh my gosh! a man finally man enough to ask such a question! I am so happy! i think every guy should file there nails! it is unnatural for men to have long nails! Plus they hurt! clip them short first and then file them! It also helps to go get a male manicure at-least once a month! it keeps them clean and looking great! don't listen to other guys when they are stupid enough to think just because you want your nails to look nice your gay! it isn't true!
why the heck would you want to file your nails just bite them thats what i do exspecially whan my teacher gos on and on and on believe me it keeps you busy and before you know it class is over time for next period.
I don't think you should file your nails, but if you want to (or need to) you'd have to use a girl's one because I don't think that they make them for guys. You can get them all over the place, and if you don't want to get one yourself ask your mom, sister, girlfriend or whatever to pick one up for you. You are usually suppossed to file them straight across, but since you're a guy then you might want to round them.
yes you should file your nails, otherwise the edges could get caught up in something and that can be painful.

Just go to walmart, Walgreen's, or wherever they have a beauty section and buy a nail file.. doesnt matter which one you buy really.your nails have to be a little long in order to file them roundly, dont cut them before you start filing, just file roundly. kind of hard to explain
    yes if your gay

peeps have a look at his other Questions

    lmao
if your gay go buy one and do it....but otherwise i wouldn't do it if i was you.
    only if you're gay....

I need to file my nails. They've finally started to grow, but I don't know how?

I started taking prenatal vitamins to help my thinning hair. Now my nails are growing, but I don't know how to manicure them. Where do I start? How do I shape them?I need to file my nails. They've finally started to grow, but I don't know how?
If you can afford it I would go have myself a manicure.

Reason being while you are there you can watch and ask as many questions as you want and it would be a one time thing.. unless you love it and want to go back..

Its easier to understand something while you are watching it.

But get yourself some good emery boards..

File from the outside going towards the tip... ( in a one way direction, not a sawing motion) always as this will prevent you from getting rough edges that can break.. keep a good undercoat under your nail polish to prevent nail discoloring..

Hope this helps and btw congratulations!!I need to file my nails. They've finally started to grow, but I don't know how?
Thanks and yes its an affordable luxury..especially the first time! :)

First cut with a good nail cutter. Be careful. Cut to a length slight longer than you'd like.

Next. Use an emery board or block (you can find them at any personal care stores). Place the board at an angle underneath your nail. Stroke your nail edge in one direction and continue for the whole nail edge.

There are two main shapes for nails. Square-ish or round. Round is more flattering if you've chubby fingers like me and much easier to file.
