If you can afford it I would go have myself a manicure.
Reason being while you are there you can watch and ask as many questions as you want and it would be a one time thing.. unless you love it and want to go back..
Its easier to understand something while you are watching it.
But get yourself some good emery boards..
File from the outside going towards the tip... ( in a one way direction, not a sawing motion) always as this will prevent you from getting rough edges that can break.. keep a good undercoat under your nail polish to prevent nail discoloring..
Hope this helps and btw congratulations!!I need to file my nails. They've finally started to grow, but I don't know how?
Thanks and yes its an affordable luxury..especially the first time! :)

First cut with a good nail cutter. Be careful. Cut to a length slight longer than you'd like.
Next. Use an emery board or block (you can find them at any personal care stores). Place the board at an angle underneath your nail. Stroke your nail edge in one direction and continue for the whole nail edge.
There are two main shapes for nails. Square-ish or round. Round is more flattering if you've chubby fingers like me and much easier to file.
