I have two Chipoos (Chihuahua/Poodle Mixes). I also used to take them to the groomer but it got very expensive. I now do all of their grooming by my self at home. I bought electric clippers at PetSmart, dog shampoo, brushes, ear cleaner, etc. It has worked out great. My husband even set up a table in our basement when I can groom them. They love it.
About the nails...I just received (this week actually) a new device to file their nails, the Peticure. I have read that clipping their nails is not the best for them and mine hated it. I previously had been filing them with a file instead of cutting them but that took FOREVER! I have used the new Peticure which is just like one of those electric nail sanders you can find at PetSmart/Petco, etc exepct it has a safety guard on it to protect their feet and nails. So far they don't mind it and it works great!

I have had great experiences with the dog nail clipper, I think it's a wonderful tool.
Clip the dogs nails until you reach about 1 mm or more from the red/pink part.

well, i have a cavalier king charles spaniel, and i'm just going to say one thing about the nail clipping! he's a GREAT dog, everyone loves him, great temperment, gets along perfect with our black lab, and is 1 year and like 2 months old. we have a little ';machine'; that clips the nails of dogs (so much faster and is safe etc. etc.) and he FLIPS OUT! like, the black lab doesn't care at all, and just lies down in his bed, but we have to hold scampy (the cavalier) and he moves all around and cries and we can't do it at ALL! we have tried a couple times, keep in mind we got him september 23rd 2007, and now its august 11th, 2008 and we have only successfully clipped his nails once... and that was when he was under anestia (for being nutered, i know i cant spell anything!) and the vet did it!
so all in all, my little story is just saying that i think you should have the groomers clip his nails! you could try it yourself, but i think it will be much more successful if you just pay for it to be done! thats probably what we will do with scampy soon!!
good luck!!
