My parents have waited way too long to file my dog's nails. What should we do?

My 6 year old pug, Dudley, hates having his nails filed. We cannot clip his nails. I can't remember why, but whenever we clip his nails it causes issues, so we have no choice but to file them. He hates having his feel held, and now his nails are touching the ground when he walks and his cuticles are very long. What should we do?My parents have waited way too long to file my dog's nails. What should we do?
Take him to a vet or a groomer to have his nails clipped. That way they won't be too short and cause him pain. They don't seem to fuss nearly as much when someone other than a family member cuts their nails. No self respecting Pug wants his nails trimmed! My parents have waited way too long to file my dog's nails. What should we do?
do it when hes sleep thats what i do soo it doesn't cause too much trouble
Have a vet clip them now so that if the quicks bleed they can treat them.

For future use what we use on our Danes is a dremel. It is a small sanding tool. The best part about this is if the quicks are long it cauterizes them to help with the bleeding as well the nails come out round so they are not sharp like when you cut them. A lot faster then trying to file them as well.
You have 2 options! You can have the vet do it, or have a groomer do it. They deal with this everyday and can do it for you. It's not expensive! I have to do that with my dogs sometimes, and have never had a problem getting them clipped.
To avoid trauma, pay money to have a vet do it for you.

Then after that, you can maintain it.
You'll need to take the dog to the groomers or to the vets so that they can trim his nails.
Take him to the vet or groomer, they can do it for under $15. I'm not sure how extensive his phobia of nail cutting is, but some clients I know sedate their cats before coming in in order to get the nails clipped. It is not good to let the nails grow that long as they can cause pain and discomfort. In between cuttings walk him on more cement surfaces to increase the amount of time in between cuttings.
taking him to the vet or a groomer would be the best bet.
I have been meaning to try the dremel method on one of my dogs who's nails are very black. It's easy to quick him so I have a hard time getting them short enough with cutting. Also, I decided to take him to my old vet to have his nails clipped and clipping his nails has been a nightmare ever since. He was so traumatized that he runs and hides if he even sees the clippers in my hand.
maybe a dog groomer or a vet can help you cut them.

my sister had a dog that had long nails like that it caused her doggies feet to become infected.

Good luck :)
I would take him to a professional groomer, or have your vet do it.
file them.

at this stage he may need to be taken to a vet and sedated for the process.

next time do not wait for your parents to file them,do it yourself, pets are a responsibility that the whole family should share.
Take him to a professional, or take him walking every day on hard tar surfaces to wear them down.
Start taking off a little bit every day. If you gradually take off the length then the quick will recede before you get to it and you will be able to get your dogs nails to a more reasonable length.
take him to a groomer. they can make you both feel better about it and they could even give you some tips on how to care for his nail problems.
Take him to a professional groomer that you trust.

Nail trimming should only be about $20.
If they are too long, and the fact he hates having it done.

I would take him to the vet to have them done.

Also who told you they cant be cut? Seems to me they could. I would consult the vet on that one also.

Good luck
Most vets will take care of this quite quickly. If your dog hates this type of fuss and wants to snap, the vet may need your help or bring in an assistant to help hold your dog down (and he may be muzzled).

In general, though, exercise and movement are enough to keep a dog's nails ';trim enough';. They may never be short, but they wear down just from running, walking and playing. If your dog's nails are as long as you described, after getting them trimmed, I would recommend increasing his exercise substantially. Going for daily walks may even be enough!
There should be no reason why you can't clip a dogs nails.

Filing usually will not remove enough material, to do enough good. Dogs should have their nails done at least once a month, if not more, especially for a strictly indoor dog. Dogs that spend more time outside tend to wear them down with running and walking.

If you can afford to, take him to the vet and ask them to clip them for you. They are very used to doing this for people.
Once a week file his nails down as close to the quick as you can and soon the quick will start to go back farther so you can file his nails shorter and wont have to do it as often. I know it will be a pain if he doesnt like his feet touched but some things take time and patience so good luck!
Have your vet trim them for you.
