How do you file your nails properly?

Whenever I file my nails, little bits flake off and they end up looking uneven, with the nails more brittle. How do you file your nails properly?
It is generally recommended that you file each side of your nail from the side in toward the middle of the nail (and not in a sawing back-and-forth motion). Concentrate on smoothing only the top edge. Filing the corners away will weaken the nail and lead to breakage.

Besides filing, the best tip I ever got was to remember not to use your nails as a tool. Don't use them to remove staples, scrape away stickers, open soda can tabs, etc. This will make the biggest difference in allowing your nails to grow long.

same direction- then smooth and round out edges- maybe run the file under your nail the tiniest bit- it is a hard thing to describe. for a very nice french manicure have good- not sticky- nail polishes and tape of the tip when doing the white part.

File your nails so they 'round off' at the tips of your fingers - don't file down into the sides. That will makethem weak and break or peel.

File in only one direction.

If you buff your nails, make sure you don't use the coarsest side more than once a month. How do you file your nails properly?
