Once a month is usually pretty good. Your groomer can do it for pretty cheap, we do it at my mom's grooming shop for around $5 for small dogs, $10 for big dogs. Filing themd own may cost a little extra. You could always look into that Pet-icure filing thing. It looks pretty much like a dremmel with a guard on it.
